Beginning Violin tunes?

Beginning Violin tunes?

My six year old daughter is taking Suzuki violin and I've just recently started forcing^H^H^H^H^H persuading her to play some ITM with me. For starters I taught her "Britches Full of Stitches".

(Well, to be honest I played the A part slowly for her once and then started walking through the first few measures on the whistle. She gave me a kind of funny look and then interrupted me and said "Does it go like this?" and played the A part nearly flawlessly. I'm now torn between my pride for her skill and my envy for her ability to learn by ear :-)

Anyway, not knowing anything about violin myself, I'm requesting some other starter tunes for her. Polkas that would work with Britches would be nice, but I'm open to suggestions. (Well, no airs, I'm really interested in tunes she'll be able to play in the local slow session.) Right now I think she plays two full octaves from G to G.

Thanks for any help...

Re: Beginning Violin tunes?

Sounds like she'd be able to handle just about any of the beginner tunes, really. Having taught Irish tunes to quite a few Suzuki kids, they really pick it up quickly, all those little nuances that make the difference, it's wonderful/sickening how fast they can pick it up, isn't it?! Play a few tunes for her and let her pick which ones she wants to do. Any of the usual would be good...we just had a big ol' thread on beginner tunes...any of the ones on there probably wouldn't be beyond her if she's gotten that far in Suzuki (if she's gotten past the Anna Magdalena minuets, she could do any of the beginner reels easily enough).

Re: Beginning Violin tunes?

The Armagh Polka (sometimes called Ryan's and played in the Titanic film) is a good one to follow the Britches; this can then be followed by the Ballydesmond (GA Bd, gf ed, eA AB, =c, etc) to make up a catchy, but simple, threesome. I haven't checked yet whether these are posted on the site but if not, I'll add them.

Re: Beginning Violin tunes?

I teach a now 6yr old girl the fiddle the tunes I would reccomend are1: Egans Polka, 2:Belfast Polka, 3: Rogha Liadroma, 4: Don Oiche Ud i mBeithil, 5:Munster Buttermilk, Maybee. Play all very slowly, Songs are good, if you start off playing yourself and getting her to sing, than get her to play a little, then get her to play the song on her fiddle, that might be a good way of doing it.
Another good thing is Christmas carols, as most kids know these off by heart, If any of the tunes I mention are not in the database I'll Post them
