Friends, Romans, Irish musicians... lend me your ears...
Friends, Romans, Irish musicians... lend me your ears...
I have a friend who's making a CD and has asked me to asist in finding the correct or best titles for some of the tunes. I put up some mp3s of the ones that have me stumped and I'm wondering if I could get some help from y'all.
This is second in a set of barndances on Paul McGrattan and Paul O'Shaughnessy's album "Within a Mile of Dublin", but it can also be foundon James Byrne's album "The Road to Glenlough"... 1 down...
Re: Friends, Romans, Irish musicians... lend me your ears...
Here is the specific note on this tune from the Byrne recording:
"Mic Carr’s ~ James (Byrne) plays regularly with Micheál Car who is equally adept on accordion and fiddle and who inherited many unusual tunes from his father, Mick. The former popularity of barndances is evident from the many commercial recordings made by Irish musicians in the United States of America in the 1920s and the 1930s. Barndances as played in Donegal are more relaxed in tempo and less rhythmically accented than those recorded in America by James Morrison, the Flanagan Brothers, Frank Quinn and others."
Re: Friends, Romans, Irish musicians... lend me your ears...
It isn't "Miss Lyall's" in any fashion. I think it might be a take off on "Little Katie Kearney"? It is very familiar even if my brain isn't putting all the pieces together... Here is the version given on site here ~
Re: Friends, Romans, Irish musicians... lend me your ears...
Sorry button, #1 doesn't ring any bells. I've worked from the middle up, and it is late now and I've a little bit more work to tend to here. I haven't checked 4 & 5 but suspect others will find those for you. I'll check back tomorrow sometime, and I'll see if I can find a version of Katie's nearer to the one here, which is nearer to my recollection and memory than the transcript on site...
Re: Friends, Romans, Irish musicians... lend me your ears...
Both tunes in #2 have been recorded by Altán, as has the reel in set #5. The reel in #4 is on this recording http://www.thesession.org/recordings/display/1415
but I don't know which one it is, or if there's a more well-known name for it.
Jeez - sounds like one of those logic puzzles: "Jim is next to Ann and the girl wearing a blue skirt. John doesn't like cheese but his neighbour is drinking the chocolate milkshake. Which one has a foot-fetish"
Anyway I'm going to bed - v. tired. I know I've been as much use as a chocolate fireguard but maybe what I've written will help jog someone's memory.
Re: Friends, Romans, Irish musicians... lend me your ears...
The very first tune is a reel version of the jig Brennan's Favourite. This reel version came from the creative mind of Belfast fiddle player Andy Dickson, who played fine music with Dermy Diamond in the eighties and who is still playing away at sessions in the city today. I don't know what name Andy gave the tune, but as I learned it from him, I call it after it's creator- so Andy Dickson's it is.
Re: Friends, Romans, Irish musicians... lend me your ears...
At what point does a variant of a tune become a new tune in its own right ?
I hear the first tune as a variant of John Brennan's, as posted here as a reel, but with significant differences. It's a nice one, though.
Re: Friends, Romans, Irish musicians... lend me your ears...
Well... we got recognized for our contributions on my friend's CD (that just showed up in my mail box.) It says "Thanks to Jack Gilder and his pals at thesession.org." If you're interested in getting a copy here's her web address.

Re: Friends, Romans, Irish musicians... lend me your ears...
OK... I'll take a stab at one. For the first one, arkle_mountain.mp3, I say "A Day with No Chores" or "Saturday Morning".
To me, it expresses a light and happy feel, and I'm more apt to experience those feelings when either of these two things occur.

I'll check Miss Lyall's Reel, but I suspect that is right. It is very familiar... I'm not sure if it is on site here though... I'll be back.

Re: Friends, Romans, Irish musicians... lend me your ears...
I've only heard one recording of the first reel in set #1.
It's on 4 Men and a Dog's Barking Mad LP and it is of course the ONLY one listed as "Gan Ainm"!!

Well, I don't know why I bothered coming back to check...

Nicely done gang, all we need is that other name... I thought the first one was a hornpipe? I guess that shows where my ears are after midnight...

Significant differences to the extent that it bears no resemblance to it whatsoever you mean?
