New discussion forum opening!

New discussion forum opening!

Hey all-

I am in the process of completing a Gaelic oriented site. When totally finished, it will have a webstore, song/tune scans, stories, information, etc.

Part of this is a discussion forum. There are sections there that are for instruments (Such as flute, whistle, bodhran, etc) as well as current events, sessions, etc. as well as manufacturers and handcrafting.

Please, when you get a chance, stop by, see what it looks like, offer suggestions, sign up, refer to friends, or just ignore things entirely.

The web address is http://www.gaeliccrossings.com

Additionally, I am still working on the scans of a book called the King street session songbook. The index is up, and you can request individual scans, but there's over 1000 tunes, it will be a while before they are all scanned in. (However, requests do take priority.)

Hope to see you all there at one time or another!

Aodhan.

Re: New discussion forum opening!

Hi Aodhan,

Apologies for appearing harsh but...

It would have helped if you'd spent some time researching into ITM by using this site before advertising your own.

Also, it's not a good idea to ask people to comment on a web site which to me looks as though it has barely been started.

One thing I'm sure a few of the members of www.thesession.org will find amusing is that the fiddle is classified in the forum as "Other Instruments" which quotes examples of ones hardly anyone plays i.e. harp and hammered dulcimer!.

My other concern more generally speaking is that the site is very ambitious - probably too ambitious - you're trying to cover everything Celtic by the looks of it, it will rapidly get too big to manage and various sections will have to go (or will be rarely updated).

Anyone prone to purchasing plastic leprechauns or wearing Arran sweaters (including tasteful shamrock) may be attracted to what you have on offer, though I suspect that real Celts and music enthusiasts will be surfing in a different sea.

Re: New discussion forum opening!

hey i love the idea of your gaeilic oriented site but maybe it would be worth pointing that i go to school in the gaeltacht here in Donegal, that you wouldnt say "A failte romhat" but Failte Romhat - "A" isnt used in irish the same way as in english. despite that, best of luck with the site, and i'll look forward to seeing the tunes!

Re: New discussion forum opening!

Hey there -
I think the forums are a great idea and that should be the main focus of your site. Time has shown that the most succesful sites are fueled by community posts and discussion, not by the content provided by the site owner.
I also think you're biting off a little more than you can probably chew, as far as creating your own content is concerned. It's a cool idea, and shows how enthusiastic you are about things "gaelic", but it's a huge endeavor and I doubt if anyone could do it alone.
Best,
Chris

Re: New discussion forum opening!

You should definately check out some other "portal" sites which aim to cover off everything in the topic of interest. The "planet" sites are good examples, such as planetunreal.com, or planethardware.com.
As stated by chris, successful sites like this are community driven, and you should note that planetunreal.com simply hosts smaller development / interest teams with the mainpage a day-to-day update of what its community is up to.
You may also want to get a few people on board to help you develop and maintain the site, unless you plan on making the site your full time profession.
good luck

I am thinking of starting a Latin based website - "forums" (sic)

Re: New discussion forum opening!

Concertina-

Thanks for your input! I did overlook adding the fiddle, and due to a couple of other requests, put boxes in their own category as well.

As far as comments, my only request was to stop by and possibly join in. Even young websites have to start somewhere, and if all people do is sit back, then it will die an early death. I may be a little ambitious, and the rest very well may be scaled back in scope. Right now I am working on getting the whistle and flute manufacturers entered into the shop so that can open up.

Thanks for the information and criticism, it's all gratefully received.

Mairtin-

Thanks, most of the Gaelic I know so far is self taught. I'll get that corrected soon. :) And none of the hyperlinks on the main page (With the exception of the forums) have content behind them yet, so I have them disabled. Probably should take them out completely for the moment...hmmm...

Domhniaill - There is a discussion forum for sessions, with a couple of announcements already posted. However, thesessioneer.com already has a session listing (Albeit limited listings in the states), and I already have a lot on the agenda. It may be a future consideration, but right now the forum is my only session area.

Re: New discussion forum opening!

Aodhan,

I glad you took my over-zealous criticism so well (I'd just been posting on stock market BB's and tensions were running high - which accidentally flowed into this normally laid-back BB !).

You've got some good ideas and I hope you can make the site a success. Let us know when you've got more of the links working.

Re: New discussion forum opening!

Aodran,
Just checked out your site and want to offer encouragement to continue. Any and all websites dedicated to the expansion of 'all things celtic' musically and culturally will only serve to disseminate information worldwide. The fact that you're open to suggestion(s) will only serve to strengthen your site. Will look forward to future developments at Gaelic Crossings. Good Luck!
