St. Pat's Day, New Orleans, LA...make your plans, get your tickets, bring your instruments!

St. Pat's Day, New Orleans, LA...make your plans, get your tickets, bring your instruments!

I have a tentative list of events running from March 10 to the end of the month. I need to confirm the dates and events before I post them. I'll add them here once I've done that.

Of course, check out O'Flaherty's Irish Channel Centre & Pub http://www.celticnationsworld.com/oflahertys.htm along with any New Orleans/Slidell area session groups for things they will be participating in before you come.

As for the city festivities, here's a description of what goes on each year:

Getting around: http://www.neworleansonline.com/guide/transportation/

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated in New Orleans and its suburbs in the form of more parades and parties! It's the perfect season for another celebration ... after all, ....it's New Orleans, and we love to parade! New Orleans prides itself on its diversity and honors that diversity with many celebrations. There is a very large population of Irish in New Orleans. There were many Irish immigrants at the turn of the 20th century. The rest of the local population and tourists combined, being culturally diverse, join in the fun, pretending to be way more Irish than they possibly could be. Irish Pubs overflow with revelers, and spontaneous Irish music sessions form here and there.

Our annual St. Patrick's Day Parades are considered another opportunity for family and friends to get together and enjoy a day outdoors. It seems as if the entire city is on the street with picnic baskets, umbrellas, and their recreational vehicles...enjoying one of the biggest street parties of the year next to Mardi Gras itself!

Men and women in walking groups from various clubs in the city dress in costumes of green give out flowers, beads, and kisses to lucky parade goers along the route. Irish Pubs overflow with dancers, musicians and revelers.

Music adds to the festivities with bands and amplifiers in the parade, and walking groups dancing down the street...only stopping to award their beautiful beads and flowers to the lucky parade-goers along the route. Floats and truck floats (those on flatbed trailors created by the riders themselves) respond to the call, "Throw me something, Mister!" Historically, the parade's most famous throws are cabbages, carrots, onions...and moonpies! (You may even see a potato or two in the air!)

I'll post the events in this thread as I confirm them.

As an alternative to New Orleans, I'd suggest Savannah, GA. It hosts the second (only to NYC) largest St Paddy's parade in the USA with lots of attending music....I'll be there with a large group of session friends, this is the first year for me, but it's been an annual event for them for several years. I'm really looking forward to it!
