Charlie Lennon dvd

Charlie Lennon dvd

Just bought a Charlie Lennon DVD and this is more or less what he says about triplets " if the tune goes taaa- (Note before triplet) ta-ta-ta (which is the triplet)and taaa and you learn that slowly, by speeding it up you will not be able to play the triplet" Now that for me is bad teaching, he doesn't tell you how to play but tells you if you go about it slowly it won't help and it's all in the wrist movement!

I find the lessons very badly explained and in general a waste of money.

Has anyone else got the same experinece or is it just me getting old and cranky...

Re: Charlie Lennon dvd

I bought that DVD some time ago. I did not find it particularly helpful for a novice player. It definitely does not provide the depth of instruction that you find on Kevin Burke's CDs, but I don't consider it a waste of money. I do prefer Paul McNevin's book/CD, Forget Me Not, book/CD by Seamus Connolly and Laurel Martin, and The Walton's Session Tunes, Slow Airs and Fiddle Tunes books/CDs, however. Between all of those you can find tunes that are easy, challenging and really challenging. If you get frustrated on the challenging tunes, you can always build your confidence up by doing one of the easier ones. I also find that the easier tunes are good for practicing ornamentation at tempo. Hearing the techniques on the CDs allows you to work on imitating the sound and not worrying so much about the actual mechanics. The books, however, give you the opportunity to read about the mechanics if you just can't get the sound.

Re: Charlie Lennon dvd

I forgot to add that all of my last comment is premised upon the fact that there isn't an Irish fiddle teacher to be found in my area. An acutal teacher, or just someone who knows how to play would be my preference.

Thanks Pearse

Yes, you are right, I don't know the Burke dvd but Mc neven's books are excellent, lots of help with rolls and triplets etc etc.
Definitely worth the money.

Where are you based that you cna't find a teacher?

I will be invbesting in the other books from Waltons soon, definitely a good investment for learning some great tunes
