Radio Mikes may become unuseable?

Radio Mikes may become unuseable?

Our dear Minster for Super-Casinos and Late Opening of Pubs is heading to cause a major headache with her swindle, sorry, sale of the analogue tv spectrum (as well as her ongoing stealth-tax of Olympic proportions)..
This part of the spectrum is also used for radio-mikes which look like being sold off. As it is very localised, it is not really of use to mobile-phone companies so I can't see anyone wanting to use them.

I use one (and could manage without), but many performers and the entertainments industry in general will be stuffed.

What problems do other people expect if they dissapear?
Any experts in radio-comms who can forsee what might happen?

Re: Radio Mikes may become unuseable?

We have a radioastronomy band in that area which is protected (for the time being) by international agreements, but we're slowly being squeezed my more and more devices operating around the protected bands. All future RadioAstronomy developement is being planned for empty areas - eg SW Australian desert or the Karoo in SA.

{start rant}
Radio pollution is getting as bad as light pollution, with all these dinky little devices we couldn't do without ... WiFi, bluetooth,, wireless burglar alarms, CCTV, home audio, mobiles, satellite comms .... the list is endless. If the government thinks there is spectrum to sell, there will be plenty of bidders.
{end rant}

Re: Radio Mikes may become unuseable?

How on earth did singers make themselves heard live on stage in front of an audience of hundreds AND over a pit orchestra, before the advent of mikes - whether radio or otherwise? They were trained to project their voices, that's how. And if they didn't then they just didn't sing live on stage in front of an audience of ... etc ...
Oh sorry, if they're not trained today then they're called "vocalists", aren't they?

Re: Radio Mikes may become unuseable?

What about in ear monitoring? Doesn't that work on the same sort of frequencies?

"if they're not trained today then they're called "vocalists", aren't they?"
If they're not trained or talented, but have sex appeal, media appeal, and cunning managers, they're called "divas".

Re: Radio Mikes may become unuseable?

Yes, I mean wireless microphones.
Yes, I read it also applies to in-ear monitoring.
Yes, I studied voice and have never used one to sing with.

It just happens that my best box has internal pick-ups and a wireless-transmitter means one less wire trailing and saves carrying an extra 2 mikes and stands.

Re: Radio Mikes may become unuseable?

Speaking as a dance caller I'm hoping they don't bugger this up, because a radio mike is an invaluable tool. I can see the need for musicians generally as well. West End shows will be absolutely stuffed, they depend on them, and I'm sure they are lobbying heavily at this very moment.
On the other hand, maybe we'll go back to projection and voice training for the pros.....
