What instruments do thesession.org members play?

What instruments do thesession.org members play?

I'm curious...

As for me...
Background is classical French (open-hole) Boehm
New to irish flute (M& E keyless D poly with a split embouchure)
Semi-new to whistles (assorted cheapies altered to be tuneable)

How about you?

Re: What instruments do thesession.org members play?

We've done this one before too, ad nauseam. :-)
Anyway, i'm pretty much the same as you, except that my Boehm flute doesn't french. I have keyless and keyed M&Es, keyed Eamon Cotter and keyless Sweetheart piccolo. Dozens of whistles, of which the only one i actually play is the Burke widebore brass.

Re: What instruments do thesession.org members play?

My apologies, maybe I searched for it with the wrong keywords. Let me try again.

Re: What instruments do thesession.org members play?

Since your question was not qualified as reqeusting what we play "well", I can list mandolin, guitar, and bass guitar -- plus I am a fairly new whistle owner.

Re: What instruments do thesession.org members play?

LOL -- well, if *ownership* of an instrument is all it takes, I'm a multi-instrumentalist... :) There's no reason why you would have been able to find the past threads.

Past threads are but are not limited to:

http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display.php/71
http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display.php/294

Have fun. Some of those were really wonderful threads, a lot of fun to read!

Also, you can look at member profiles...some of us have listed our arsenals there.

Re: What instruments do thesession.org members play?

Anyone out there play a Jing Dingler? (this appeared in an instrument inventory thread at mandolincafe.com, but the poster would not tell what it actually was)

Re: What instruments do thesession.org members play?

What a great idea !! The sessioneers ceili band. We could have nose flute and singing saws leading the melody, didge as accompaniment and the lagerphone (vertical stick covered in bottle-tops hit by a horizontal stick ie. the rattler, whilst banging vertical stick on the floor) as percussion. Katie, you can by all means guest on the armpit, but are you classically trained or did you teach yourself from playing along with Martin Hayes' albums?

Re: What instruments do thesession.org members play?

Fifes and whistles! Often, enthusiastically and occasionally well :)

My favorite flute/fife:Sweetheart African Blackwood D Fife with custom...just for me :)handfit chrome metal headjoint barrel ring (all handmade by Ralph Sweet, a true gentleman and downright interesting man from CT, USA...you simply must pay him a visit, talk/play fife or whistle and/or dance a bit at his barn/dance hall on a night he's calling contra)

My favorite whistle: Burke Pro Session Brass D Whistle

...also Cook Low D, Shaw Low G and an assortment of entirely neglected Waltons, Feadogs, Generations and Clarkes

Whistle I've NEVER found a pracitcal use for but just had to have: This tiny little Generation F I bought in Gloucester that I thought for sure I'd play some millitary or maritime on...the sea salt must've gone to my head!

COMING SOON!!!
A simple system 4-key D Ralph Cook in African Blackwood

Zina, it was such a kick to re-read the old threads that you mentioned, thanks!

Re: What instruments do thesession.org members play?

Yes, but greenwiggle, do we have anyone here who's willing to play with his dingaling? *grin* Anyone under a certain age (say, 40) is probably not going to get that joke...

Glauber, yes, those old threads -- I had a blast re-reading them this afternoon. Jeremy, I don't suppose there's any easy way to provide an easier way of navigating the old threads than that "next" button, is there? Getting back to the older threads without using the search or next functions is a really long process...I'd love to go back and read some of our earliest posts just to see what we sounded like back then... :)

Re: What instruments do thesession.org members play?

Wow...nostalgic stuff. Too bad we've lost Kerri (fiddleronvermouth), and Scotty's not around much these days. Thanks for the link Zina...it helps, after so recently wondering about how far we have to go, to look over how far we've already come.

Re: What instruments do thesession.org members play?

I know, I've been reading over some of the old threads and waxing every bit as nostalgic -- weird, huh? I miss Kerri a lot, Will. Scotto is around, but not on the computer much these days...

Re: What instruments do thesession.org members play?

As I recall, Scotto's frozen by unspecified mucus membranes to some corrugated metal roofing high above a nameless town in Ontario, daydreaming about fiddle tunes and warmer days?
:o)

Re: What instruments do thesession.org members play?

Keyboard seems to be the most popular on this site "grin, smile, guffaw, laugh, chuckle" Whats a guf for?

# Posted on January 20th 2003 by Bryan

Re: What instruments do thesession.org members play?

Well, that would explain why he can't get to the keyboard, Will...*grin* And he's waxing poetic at the same time, too. Only Scotto.

Bryan, a guf is for fawing, of course.

God, and I miss JeffK, too. I'll have to drop him a line and find out why he's abandoned us. Thank god ol' ViolaDave -- why'd you change to Big Dave, anyway, Dave? -- is still around...he's the dog's nads. *grin*

Re: What instruments do thesession.org members play?

i could n't take all the viola jokes, hohoho!
(there's another 'echt' vla joke waiting for you on your joke thread,Katie)
i also used to play a bit of tenor banjo until it caught fire

Re: What instruments do thesession.org members play?

This could be a never-ending thread if every member posts what instrument(s) they play, and new members come on-line quicker than those postings. Hmm. I think I'll go and lie down.

Well I'm another mandolin player. I own several guitars too but I don't think I've played one since I discovered the mandolin.

Re: What instruments do thesession.org members play?

There certainly is a core group of old timers here at the session, but since the majority of the group seems to fluctuate with new members all the time, I think it's not a big deal to talk about what instruments we play again.

I play harp and fiddle.

Re: What instruments do thesession.org members play?

I guess you could say that my main instrument is clarinet. That's the instrument I am studying in college. I enjoy playing tin whistles in my free time (and I have way too many tin whistles!) I also play piano, ocarina, fife, lyre, and sometimes kazoo and harmonica.

Re: What instruments do thesession.org members play?

The problem with playing multiple instruments is that there are more jokes that people can pull out of the hat.

I play Violin, Viola very well. I am not bad on the Mandolin. My Tenor Banjo, and Bouzouki playing are pretty rank. I hardly ever pull them out. The Banjo needs some attention. I think If I got 2 lessons on the 5 string banjo, guitar, and piano - I'd be twice as good as I am now. In others words, dust collectors.

I have more dust collectors to be sure but my kids like to mess with them on occasion.

Vintage glauber

The first post i could locate by me is from August 23th 2001. http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display.php/55
So this is about 3 months after the start, and i'm already member #1305!
The first tune i posted was the just barely appropriate "Fairy Queen" by Carolan:
http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/243
which i snarfed from a GIF i found somewhere, and from my memory of how Chris Norman does it in "Man With The Wooden Flute." That was August 22, 2001. Later i posted Carolan's "Farewell to Music" and "Lament for Staker Wallace", both of which Jeremy axed (and good thing too!).

I think a nice thing to have in this site would be the ability to go back and edit or delete some of the embarassing things that i posted here (and not all of them old!). :-)

Re: What instruments do thesession.org members play?

All of these HTTP links reminds me of a joke.

An American walks into an Irish pub populated with several old Irishmen having a pint at the bar. It's fairly silent until one of the old men says to his friends '39', at which point the entire pub errupts in laughter. A few moments later another man exclaims '127', and there is even more laughter.

The American is puzzled by this and asks one of the men if he could explain. 'Well", says one of the men, "It's like this. We've known each other since we were kids and we've heard everyone's jokes so many times before that we decided to give a number to each joke we know just to save a bit of time".

Facinated, the American asks if he could give it a try and the locals give him a nod. So the American says "13!", and the pub is silent but for a few crickets in the corner. Flustered, the American loudly shouts "36!", and receives only a polite chuckle. Desperate now, the American says "1864!" and the entire pub bursts into laughter!

After the laughter dies down, the American (now being fairly pleased with himself) asks "So, what joke did I say?". One local replies, "I have no idea! We've never heard that one before!'

Re: What instruments do thesession.org members play?

The Whistler -- have your ever listended to Whirligig from NYC? They play traditional jigs, reels, and ballads, as well as original compositions, but one of their main instruments is a clarinet. Pretty cool stuff IMHO.

Zina, Kerri was doing fine last time I saw her (before Christmas) and is playing at one of the sessions here in Calgary. I think she doesn't have her computer going at the moment, but I'll tell her you were asking for her...
