small Irish pubs in Manhattan! Are there any?

small Irish pubs in Manhattan! Are there any?

Hi everyone.! A few of us are going to New York for St Patrick's weekend and we are bringing our instruments . Does anyone here know of any small Irish pubs in the Manhattan area ( maybe between 30th, St. and 4th. St.) where you think the owner might let us start a session ourselves. He/she might even give us a gig. Most of the Irish pubs in this area appear massive with multiple large TV screens for sport and offering themed nights. We hope to find some small Irish pubs like the ones at home. Are there any? Even if we can't play, we're still going to really enjoy our long weekend.

if you can't find any, you could always go see Black 47 @ B.B. King's! www.black47.com

Actually, Mona's is on Ave B at 13th St-- fcoore4 is thinking of the Bar With No Name (a/k/a The 11th St. Bar) on 11th btwn A & B. The 11th St. has a kick-arse session on Sundays.

You might go to O'Neill's (on 3rd Ave btwn 45th & 46th) on Saturday, I'm sure that session will be going-- usually 9 to 1. Bernie Fee leads it, tell her I said hi.

You can also try the Landmark Tavern session (@46th and 11th). It runs Monday nights from 8-11.

Wasn't the question about starting a session themselves? That's a bit different than joining an ongoing session.

At this time of year any Irish pub is likely to have something already planned, so you'll definitely want to call first if you can. The bars will be packed to the rafters, so finding room to sit in a circle and play might be tough.

You could also try Blaggard's and Swift's. And don't rule out Brooklyn. Lots of awesome bars there.

Thanks so much, everyone. We will certainly look in on as many sessions as we can during our week there. Some sessions might even let us join them. We may even chance to busk if that's allowed. We actually intended calling into some of those small pubs immediately after we got there and checking out the possibility of whether they might let us play for a few hours during the daytime as I'm sure they will have their night-session musicians well booked in advance considering the week that's in it. I will check out those pubs you all suggested. Thing is, I e-mailed quite a few of them but got no replies. Not famous enough yet, I guess!

Mona's is definitely the place to go. A friend brought me a CD a couple of years ago of the session recorded live at Mona's and it's a classic!

One interesting point I might mention here as well is the fact that we were told we could bring all our instruments on board. We asked about this on booking and were told we could each bring our instrument on board as our carry-on item and another small personal item as well. Even guitars are going on board. We are flying Continental Airlines.

Continental are a decent airline. I've used them before and found them very considerate/helpful.

Enjoy your stay in the Big Apple.

Here's a guide for you (is this the one fcoore4 was talking about?):

I've been meaning to go to Paddy Reilly's on Thursday---it says Tony DeMarco runs that one. I wish the sessions here didn't all start so late---I need a job where I can go in at 11 in the morning!

Jack Dempsey's is good for a laugh, and a late-night session.

If a pub is not in Ireland, what makes it Irish?
