"Two birds with one stone" - the video clip at http://comhaltas.ie/music/detail/comhaltaslive_198_segment_5_edel_fox/ shows Edel Fox from Miltown Malbay, one of Clare's great young concertina players recorded at the 2004 Corofin Trad Festival. It also gives you a link to this years festival event which continues over the weekend. For anyone within striking distance of Clare, it's definitely one not to be missed!
Actually, I ignored the comment about her head, but I'll tell you this: when you look into her eyes on that clip it's obvious that this is a very intelligent young woman. It's also obvious by her playing that she lives and breaths the music. If you look at her and all you see is a weird head I think you might need to start the clip over and try again.
she was a big favorite at the last irish arts week in the catskills and she has i believe two nifty myspace pages, one with ronan and one on her own......
The timing of the ornamentation is really beautiful. Please could you describe what the 'phantom button' is? Can the principle be carried across to the accordion, do you think?
I have no idea if it translates to accordion. You can see her doing it when she does a triplet on the left-hand F, D or E (she might be doing it elsewhere too) She hits the note and holds down her finger while tapping the grillwork just above the buttons on the right side to produce another note. Then her left finger bounces twice in response to produce the next two notes. 'Du- dudatu' and so on. I call it the phantom button, but there's probably a better name for it. I'd love to hear Edel describe it. Edel... hello?
Thanks very much, PB. What an amazing thing to do! It's rather like a cran, then, with notes of the same pitch being punctuated or defined by another action. Would a long bottom D have 2 phantom notes in it? Say, for example, as at the beginning of the Long Note?
I can see it very clearly on Devaney's Goat on the low F# - |DF F3. Is it possible the other way round, i.e., on a high D triplet with the left hand making the phantom note?
So I look weird when I play, eh??! That ornament that is being reffered to above as 'the phantom button' (interesting name!!) is just something that I learned from Tim Collins years ago. Its nice if not played too harshly or frequently.
A concertina player I know who saw the clip says he'd call that ornament a "slapping" technique.
You'll have to be more cúramach in future Eurobanjo, you never know who's on this site and a less genteel soul than Edel might pay you a visit to demonstrate a less welcome form of slapping!
That's right, I've heard the "slapping" attribution before. But the thing that amazed me about it was that I had searched for that note and experimented for a long time. When Paddy Egan finally showed it to me it wasn't a button that I was looking for, but rather a button that wasn't even there. Hence, the "phantom button." For me, that's how it functions. You're hitting a button that isn't there to get a note you couldn't find. Then there's the problem of getting your other finger (that you're holding down on a button on the opposite side of the instrument) to bounce twice. That was the second revelation, but I don't know what to call that, so I just lump it all together as "The Phantom Button."
I remember seeing Tim do this when I was playing in a session with him at the Ennis Trad Fest, but I couldn’t see what button he was hitting with his right hand. I went home and experimented with every button on the right side and it never sounded right. Little did I know the button I was searching for wasn’t even there. I also remember watching Micheal O Ralghallaigh’s left hand on a TV show while he was doing this and the tight triplets came without any visible action. I was just about ready to give up all together when Pat Egan came along and finally uncovered the mystery for me. Now I suppose I’m over using it as Edel warns against… but I can’t help myself I guess.
Edel`s head looks fine and her playing is great ,however on the same site check out segment #198 for a hornpipe set from Rhona Lynch with some pretty discordant piano -or are my ears deceiving me?
very nice, edel. people tell me that my ears wiggle when i play, you look like someone who's thinking about the tunes you're playing, nothing wierd about that! Don
Your nhead looks great Edel and dont let anyone else tell you otherwise.
From what I can see Eurbanjo has a history of stirring on this site and has a weird sence of humour.
Great playing.
That triplet thingy was actually first played by Paddy Murphy from Kilmaley and in turn Noel Hill learnt it from him and is used by many concertina players. Probably the best I have seen doing it is the great Hugh Healy from Clare.
everyone knows Edel is a stunner - strange cause people always think they can say all manner of stupid untrue things on the net. My motto "put up or shut up" - slag a musician - put up a recording of yourself - slag someones looks/head/ expression - lets see a photo. easy peasy. Noticed that loads of people slag musos and will not let alone put up a recording but tend not to put anything in their bio - am I noticing a pattern here?
'How can you say that you dont like being discussed on the internet when your job is public - ie playing music? It comes with the territory.'
Edel, and a lot of other musician including myself, has a particular way of turning her head while playing and a particular expression on her face. It comes with the concentration and parts of the brain used I suppose. Concertinaplayers tend to have a particular way of doing that, as do other instrumentalists and each instrument seems to have a way typical to it. Anyhow, there's no shame in it or harm intended remarking upon it I would think. And yes I have recordings out there and can be seen chewing my tunes while playing in the TG4 archive.
Slagging is part and parcel of Irish music by the way, part of the territory too.
Its very easy o get some people going sometimes.
I enjoyed sitting back and watching the comments appear here.
I think Edel is great and looks even better! I just made that up about her head to see who would reply and to get the nos on this discussion to multioly so alot more would see her track.

No doubt, but in my opinion, this should be restricted to people who know the person they're slagging. On first appearance, the "head looks a bit weird" comment looked to me like it was kinda nasty slagging / firing insults from the safe-haven of behind a keyboard, and looked pretty sad to be honest.
If no malice was meant, fair enough, then maybe an apology to Edel is in order? I know you've said: "I think Edel is great and looks even better! I just made that up about her head to see who would reply and to get the nos on this discussion to multioly so alot more would see her track", but are you big enough to say the one word: "sorry"?
I understand it's a very small thing, and I don't want to bring more attention to it, but the problem with discussion forums like this, in such a small world, like the "Irish trad music world" is, IMO it's best not to slag off behind alias', as you can see by the reactions of others, it's not very nice.
Someone on here once said something to the effect of absolutely no-one is above criticism, on the subject of music, but rubbish like that about an obviously good looing girl is a bit stupid, to say the least.
Any chance of that one small word: "SORRY" to Edel, here on the public forum?
I'm not trying to stir anything, just saying this should be about the music, and slagging and a bit of banter amongst mates is fair enough, but as I said... behind alias'... might be different.
Keep up the great playing Edel and you looked great! ;)
I will refrain in the future from this sort of messing round.
I suppose it seems alot funnier when I do this from behind the keyboard but its only funny to myself.
I think I'll take a break from the session for a while and maybe ponder on this.
Again sorry to anyone who didnt appreciate this sort of humour. It must be my Dublin humour.

Don't you have to know a person first before you slag them? I would never dream of slagging someone I never met or didn't know well. There are people in this forum I have had funny slagging exchanges with, but it was only after getting to know them first. I don't know how well eurobanjo knows Edel, or if he ever met her even, but you'd have to let it be known somehow that you're friends first if you hoped your slagging is understood as such. At least that's my understanding of it.
