I'm going to enter the Fleadh this year with guitar doing the accompaniment competition. I'm just going into the 12-15 age group. I've never done the accompaniment competition before, but i've entered the fleadh so many times and on loads of different instruments before. I usually enter about eight competitions a year, and I end up with qualifying to the All Britain with them all. I tend to get qualified on three to get to the All Ireland. This year though, I've dropped my fiddle competitions and gone for accompaniment. I'm thinking of playing in DADGAD tuning. I've used it before and I love it; but is it suitable? Could anyone give me advice on my tuning, rhythms and maybe tunes to play to?
have a look at jim murray , arty mcglynn and donacha moynihan .try and contact these guys through the net or just listen to thier playing and you cant go wrong.
I know nothing about competing in accompaniment, didn't even realize there was a category for that, but wish you all the best of luck. I would say that you should stick to the tuning you are most comfortable with, I would think you will be judged more by what you do with it than how you are tuned.
