As a flute player, I have noted many names associated with winning All-Ireland prizes for their flute playing. Sometimes it seems like there are more winners than years, so I wondered if there is more than one competition in Ireland each year that can bestow that title. Or is the same competion held more frequently than annually?
4 age groups = 4 winners each year. The "All-Ireland" is held once a year - since 1955, I think [with 1 exception] - organised by Comhaltas Ceoltoiri na hEireann. There are other competitions , Oireachtas for example, but you only get "All-Ireland champions" from the "All-Ireland" Fleadh.
As I discovered when I once stumbled upon the 2004(?) All-Ireland Fleadh results somewhere on the web, there is a category for 'Irish Conversation', for which the age groups differ slighty from the instrumental and singing categories - there are 5 or 6 groups, instead of 4.
I still puzzle over how you can have a competition in *conversation*.
Traditionally, those who place in the top three places in the senior championships are entitled to refer to themselves as "All-Ireland Champion," not only the winner.

My thanks to anyone who can answer this.

Re: All-Ireland Winners
Oh yes, one more thing - there are categories for flute, flute slow air, and then there are the duets, trios, flute bands, etc.
