Usernames - Why you use the one you do?

Usernames - Why you use the one you do?

Looking over the posts, it occurred to me that there are some unusual Usernames used here. I wondered what may be the story behind them.

What significance does your username have?

Mine is fear dearg.

"The Fear Dearg, pronounced far darrig - 'Red Man' was the practical joker of the fairy realm. He always dressed in red and played many morbid tricks upon unsuspecting mortals. He preferred to work alone."

"who "busies himself with practical joking, especially with gruesome joking".

"slouching, jeering, mischievous phantom"

Except for the fairy part and red attire, that's me.

What is your story. I have become very curious.

Re: Usernames - Why you use the one you do?

Ailin is the celtic version of my name, which is Alan. Alan was used, so I opted for Ailin, and the system took it. I find "creative" usernames irritating, but that's just a pet peeve of mine. On any website I have ever joined, I have always just used my name. I'm rather attached to it, as it happens.

Re: Usernames - Why you use the one you do?

Although I have never played a bodhran in my life I used the name Bodhranbliss because when I came on the the site it was full of "can I be part of the gang" attitudes, such as attacking bodhrans, The Chieftains, Tuners, and Riverdance in no particular order.

I actually play the pipes.

Re: Usernames - Why you use the one you do?

I've explained mine before; it's all about the latest revelation on playing my concertina. I've struggled for years to figure out how to get tight triplets on the weakest fingers of my left hand. I finally found the button I was searching for that made this possible, but the odd thing is -- it doesn't exist. It is in fact a "phantom button." It is something that can be seen or heard or whose presence can be felt, but it isn't physically present. Kind of like me in these threads I suppose.

Re: Usernames - Why you use the one you do?

I used to have the name Plucker which was subliminally inspired by the Adge Cutler song "I'm not a pheasant plucker but a pheasant plucker's son". I'm glad I changed it - I wouldn't want to be a Bernard Matthews plucker right now.

Re: Usernames - Why you use the one you do?

I placed the one and only bid on a guitar shaped fiddle and won it on ebay.....my curvy fiddle......(also nicknamed Dolly).....and since it's the instrument I play....it's the username I chose. ;-)

Re: Usernames - Why you use the one you do?

I was boring and used my name. I then realised it wasn't necessarily a good idea - I haven't been involved in any spats online yet... but.... :-)

Besides - isn't it refreshing to have at least one session-orger not hiding behind a marvel comic type username?

OK... I admit it - I can't think of anything witty enough... happy now?:-)

Re: Usernames - Why you use the one you do?

I started playing B/C box about four years ago, to complement my efforts on tenor banjo. It's going to take a lot more than four years for me to become really fluent...nearer a million years in fact.

Re: Usernames - Why you use the one you do?

That's not what your bio says bliss. Mind you, I do play bodhran but it doesn't say so in my bio.

I wanted to use my own name but someone already has it as a username, and I have never ever seen them post. So I chose curlew, as they could be seen and heard in the spring on the farm where I lived, and they do evoke remoteness.

I myself like quiet, peaceful places you see.

I've since moved to the coast and I hear them most days now.

Re: Usernames - Why you use the one you do?

I teach high school history classes (Well, most days I do. today I've been laid up with flu and hallucinating about teaching.) Anyways, it occurred to me that I needed a readily memorable email address so the whipper snappers could contact me directly w/o phoning. I choose "wormdiet@. . . ." because they were working on a project about Martin Luther at the time. This was 5 years ago. The students moved on but the name stuck.

My name is really Erik, but that username was taken so I added an "r"... odd, I know

Re: Usernames - Why you use the one you do?

Hmmm.. I really don't know how Fiddlinviolinin came to be..

I THINK it was 'cause I was making a new screen name at the time and I was thinking "Fiddlin" something and so since Fiddlin is Fiddle.. Violinin is to Violin!

Cheers,

Re: Usernames - Why you use the one you do?

I live in a mansion with a cave in the basement; I fight crime and bring evil-doers to justice. I have gauntlets that allow me to zap shady characters who call tunes " songs" and who learn their tunes off Lunasa CDs. Or play bodhrans without properly acknowledge the essential superiority of the melody players. I really look great in a black vinyl catsuit.

That would be "acknowledging"....

Yeah, really, I've seen Batlady with her full kit on... She's one mean dude and the bad guys all scatter before her... I think it is her supersonic singing that really has them scattering though, oh my aching tinnitis... The catsuit, now that's just plain sexxxxy... ;-)

Um. Sunnybear, is the cat a favorite because it is dead (no more shredded furniture, hairballs, etc.) or WAS a favorite and has now passed on to the great sunny windowsill in the sky? Just curious.

Re: Usernames - Why you use the one you do?

I used to play lead guitar in a Grateful Dead cover band and the lead singer dubbed me "Crazy Fingers", which is the name of a Grateful Dead song that I like a lot. The name stuck with me into my current band (Craic Wisely) in which I play mandolin and fiddle.

I don't think anyone cares, but as I'm bored, my nickname is my name, a name in Catalan, which is like Peter in English. Boring, I know, but that's just how I am.

Re: Usernames - Why you use the one you do?

I don't see the connection between a diet of worms and Martin Luther but the name certainly sticks.
I chose mine because I can remember it. It's the first letters of my last name and I used them when I wrote for the local paper.

Re: Usernames - Why you use the one you do?

I don't know. I wanted to sign up and make a comment and I was too impatient (and dense) to think of something clever and it just came to me. It seemed ironically self-deprecating, since Bob is such a common name. My son suggested Smeghead, which he assured me is a term of endearment and respect, but I thought that would be too pompous.

# Posted on February 10th 2007 by Bob himself

Re: Usernames - Why you use the one you do?

No significance at all. I just picked something that was completely different from my real name. Kennedy sounded Irish enough, and Robert Kennedy is my hero anyway, so I figured it would work.

It kinda feels like my name now, though...

Well, my initial is T, and my last name is Wildman (pronounced like "policeman" or "fireman", but with a "wild" instead). I have had lots of fun with that name, and no, don't bother; you cannot come up with a riff on it that is original.

Re: Usernames - Why you use the one you do?

There´s nothing cryptic about my username. It combines the first syllable of my name with a reference to the instrument I play (concertina).
I had thought of ´Murf the Surf` ( an Australian disc jockey I believe) but it seemed a bit phoney because I don´t surf (although my sons do !).
Throughout school I was known as Spud, but I thought that was too much of a blast from the past.
I had a look at the number of Murphys in the members section and was amazed. Not many of them are active, though.

# Posted on February 10th 2007 by murfbox

Re: Usernames - Why you use the one you do?

I guess I'm not all that original.....the first part of my username is actually my name, and the last part is because I play violin, and somehow the combination seemed to fit!

Re: Usernames - Why you use the one you do?

Morning star, I don't see how you are "even" with feardearg as we still know nothing about you.

Batlady, you are particularly on form today.

kennedy, I always thought you were the famous quirky concert violinist who dropped his first name (Nigel) for some years.

My name comes either from my habit of not remembering to change strings often enough, or from being senior to your average plucker. It just seemed to have a good ring to it, like my banjo.

Re: Usernames - Why you use the one you do?

Fisarmonicha is just the italian word for accordion. My father was born just outside of Castel Fidardo Italy (Fano). He didn't play box; however he did noodle on the harmonica when putting me to sleep as a baby. So I guess I've been listening to free-reed instruments most of my life.

I'm a fiddler, so that's where "nofrets" comes from. It's also my personality. Don't take many things too seriously. Just do my best, and don't have high expectations of others. You can only control yourself anyway. Seems to be a decent formula for being happy.

Re: Usernames - Why you use the one you do?

I used to play in a folk/rock band and we played for a lot of ceilidhs. Our parting shot was to hold a dancing competition of fiddle versus dancers. The last one still going after five rounds of a tune won a massive bar of chocolate. What the dancers didn't realise was that I was never going to let that chocolate escape and therefore the tune got faster and faster until there was not one dancer still standing. At which point the fire extinguishers were brought on to put out the burning bow. Simple really!

Drone: the somewhat pointless male (bee) sponges off the hive until the queen uses him for her own selfish sexual purposes, and then, unprepared to the utmost, he is driven out to his impending death. Also a single (mono) tone that goes on and on... and on ...and on... I could go on, but...
