Ceol an Clair

Ceol an Clair

Does anyone have the tracklist for Ceol an Clair, the old Comhaltas LP with John Kelly, Patrick Kelly, Paddy Canny, Junior Crehan and others? There are some copies floating round, but I ain't seen a list of the tune names and who's playing what anywhere. It would be lovely to have that posted.

And let me know if I can scratch your back.

Re: Ceol an Clair

Have you searched the threads here? I know we've covered this before. If that fails, I have a track list...I'll get to it when I sober up.....

Re: Ceol an Clair

Could you post it in the "Recordings" section, Will? If not, I can.

Re: Ceol an Clair

The reason I haven't posted it there, if my memory isn't completely full of holes, is that there are different versions of the recording out there, with the tracks in different orders.

But I suppose just having the names of tunes would be better than nothing, as long as people realize the sequence may be off....

Re: Ceol an Clair

Good man, Will. I'll see how that corresponds with my recording. I also seem to remember that transcriptions of most - if not all - of the tunes on this recording form the basis of David Lyth's 2nd book on Irish fiddle bowing styles [ the exact name escapes me for the moment ].

Thanks Will, that is Progress of a Real Kind. And also, it is Kind.

Re: Ceol an Clair

So was this recording really not listed previously in the archives here? I searched for it under all spellings of the title I could imagine, and by artist names, and came up empty. I'm surprised that such a seminal recording wasn't in here already.

When I can free up a few moments, I'll post who plays on each track.

Re: Ceol an Clair

I searched here and googled every misspelling I could think of, and it wasn't there. Hence the request.

Re: Ceol an Clair

For the record, the album's actual title is 'Ceol an Chlár' and it was supposed to be in the process of being reissued by CCÉ a couple of years ago, but it doesn't look as though it's happened.

Re: Ceol an Clair

Weird. Well I'm happy to have posted it. I cut my teeth on that recording, and Bobby Casey's playing of Drunken Gauger is still one of my favorite tracks of all time.

Re: Ceol an Clair

My old copy was labeled "Cheol an Clair" with a mark over the "a" in Clair.

Re: Ceol an Clair

Well, I've got "Ceol an Clair" with the mark over the "a" in "Clair".No "h".

Re: Ceol an Clair

My record lists 21 tracks, but the order of tunes is the same.

Re: Ceol an Clair

There's no 'h' i n the name on the original lp cover.

John Moulden had a supply of the lp, I bought a copy off him at the 1997 or 1998 Willie Week and have seen it mentioned on his website it was in stock much more recently

Re: Ceol an Clair

My original was a cassette tape, no doubt made after the lp.

Thanks Kenny for the confirmation on the track sequence.

Re: Ceol an Clair

Sorry, I misprinted. It should be 'Ceol an Chláir' and that is definitely the album's title.

Re: Ceol an Clair

Geoff, As I said above, while your spelling is the correct one, it is not the one used on the lp itself. So what is 'definitely' the title of an lp: the one printed on the cover?

Re: Ceol an Clair

My copy is called 'Cool and Clear', but I bought it from my imaginary friend, who is an imaginary meteorologist.

Re: Ceol an Clair

Kilfarboy, have a look at the big 'C' at the beginning of 'Ceol' on the album's cover. Is there something like a symbol indicating degrees hanging above it? If so, that's shorthand for 'Ch'. If not, I'll get my coat.

Re: Ceol an Clair

Just looking at the LP now--the dot falls over the "c" in Clair, so the official title spelling (verified by on the actual album label) is Ceol an Chláir.

Re: Ceol an Clair
