Geantrai (tonight) - Sunday's repeat.

Geantrai (tonight) - Sunday's repeat.

Just watched Sunday's repeat of Geantrai, presented by Dónal Murphy.

Tony O'Connell and Derek Hickey, Kevin Burke and Ged Foley, Louise and Michelle Mulcahy, then joined with their father Mick Mulcahy.

Great stuff.

Cormac Breathnach is presenting next week's episode which Cormac said: "the Producer promises to be a different programme to the usual. Whatever that means !"

- No doubt it'll be great! Looking forward to that one too!

Re: Geantrai (tonight) - Sunday's repeat.

Murrough, I thought tonight's Geantrai was an absolute cracker. For me, about as good as ITM gets on the TV!

One minute I wanted to give up playing altogether, the next I was itching to pick something up & join in!

The whole programme was a highlight!

Re: Geantrai (tonight) - Sunday's repeat.

great, great music indeed! does anybody know who is the maker of the box that Derek plays here? is it a "Van der aa" perchance?

Re: Geantrai (tonight) - Sunday's repeat.

About time a few heavyweights made it onto Geanntrai - the box is a humble Hoher Erica C/C# - well tuned etc etc - but the player is the biggest factor in how it sounded - Sean Murphy is d banjo player....

Re: Geantrai (tonight) - Sunday's repeat.

While I think of it - Smyth's of Ranelagh was on Geanntrai a few weeks ago - the people who are behind it are great to look for free publicity but pay lip service to Irish Music - they got rid of a session in 2002/2003 of the calibre of Michelle O'Brien & Eamonn de Barra & others because they had to pay a small standard session amount for it - the fact that Kieran Hanrahan was also playing there for free each week in return for a few pints (and he should know better) might have influenced the decision - Smyth's have a Irish Traditional Music Pub of the Year plaque outside the door also - which is a disgrace - when contacted the Irish Traditional Pub of the Year Award people didn't respond with the selection criteria either.....
The management of DJ Murphy's Abbeyfeale & Smyth's Ranelagh couldn't be further apart in terms of their attitude to music & musicians...but it's interesting who has this dubious award....

Re: Geantrai (tonight) - Sunday's repeat.

I've never heard of Sean Murphy but now, I do remember that Donal said he was a brother.

Re: Geantrai (tonight) - Sunday's repeat.

regog,

please forgive me asking, but are you 100% sure its a Hohner Erica that Hickey is playing here? could you please explain what kind of treatment did old Erica receive?

Hickey is gas! worth purchasing his Mad4Trad tutorial even if just to appreciate his sweet staccato triplets and joyful 'cuts' ,
boy, the Soprani box (on the tutorial) sounds so sweet in his hands like a good uillean chanter played in a tightly manner...

Re: Geantrai (tonight) - Sunday's repeat.

That was just lovely, thanks Murrough. Kevin Burke and Jed Foley (as well as Lunasa) are going to be in Adelaide only a short 1,500 kms away in mid March, but unfortunately I won't be able to get down to see them. KB and JF are on a Wednesday night which makes it pretty impossible even to fly! Bummer! So listening to Geantrai is a pretty good option.
