Tunes for Whistle and Fiddle

Tunes for Whistle and Fiddle

Hello there! I was wondering if there're some tunes suitable for whistle and fiddle.

BTW, is that a good combination of instruments? I mean, whistle, fiddle and guitar, also. What do you think? I think the flute, fiddle and guitar trio is better, but I don't know...

Re: Tunes for Whistle and Fiddle

Road to Rio would be appropriate, and it's a great tune on fiddle, flute, and whistle. See http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/575

Re: Tunes for Whistle and Fiddle

Most of classic tunes sounds nice on the two melody instruments: Copperplates, George White's Favourtie, Peeler's Jacket, Rakish Paddy, The Old Bush, Lady on the Island, Longford Tinker, Trip to Athlone, Banks of Lough Gowna, Mug of Brown Ale, My Darling Asleep, Humours of Ennistymon, Maid on the Green, Taim in Arrears, Hardiman the Fiddler, to name just a few. Some tunes penned by fiddlers are good for whistle too: Reel of Rio, of course, Otter's Holt, Brenda Stubbert's, Skylark (in D), Aughacashel, Torn Jacket, etc.

There are too many good ones, but my favourite for whitle and fiddle duet is probably Mary McMahon's: http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/1934

Sean sa Cheo is a splendid one; not that easy for the fiddler though, it requires a position shift in the 3rd part.

Re: Tunes for Whistle and Fiddle

"is that a good combination of instruments?"

Are we talking about a band, Matt? With a session, it obviously just depends who's around.

Anyway, it's not a bad combination but an ideal line up for a band is really just a matter of taste for the members and listeners. Actually, mandolin and whistle can sound good together too.

Re: Tunes for Whistle and Fiddle

Yes John J, I was talking about a band. In my opinion, in a session it just depends on who's around, as you said.

Anyway, I think you're right when you say "it's a matter of taste".
I only thought that, maybe two high instruments like these wouldn't make a good combination.

I have only heard flute, fiddle and guitar trios but never a whistle with another instrument and guitar (very few exceptions and those sets for solo whistle).

Maybe there are a lot and I don't know any!

Thanks for your answers!

Re: Tunes for Whistle and Fiddle

Hi, I play fiddle and a freind of mine play the tin whistle. Realy I think it is a matter of taste on what song to do with those instuments. Two favorites of ours are Over the Waterfall and the Tullymore Polka, from Waking Ned Divine.

A good compliment to fiddle and whistle is the bodhran. or however you spell it.
