So I have a family friend (child) who I am going to be teaching fiddle (or at the moment she has expressed interest in violin...but I'm pretty sure she has no clue about the difference...and I'll just be teaching her the basics for a good year or so anyway) And, because of costs and availability and whatnot, I'm going to be teaching her (as you might have guessed.) But the point of this is, her family is currently looking into getting her an instrument, and since I probably won't be there to help her find the right size, what are the measurements for fiddle sizes (And are they shoulder to wrist or elbow to wrist) If anybody knows (hopefully she'll be going somewhere they have the first clue, but they're starting out with a rental so just in case...)
Ok I just read over that and it basically didn't make sense...running on very little sleep...but basically the bottom half is the important part.
And the question seemed confusing. Basically what I need to know are the arm measurements and the corresponding sizes (1/2, 3/4, etc) yeah if that made any sense at all, thanks!
k thanks! (the fingers around the scroll thing was what I was trying to remember)...that should be good for me to tell her parents (like I said, it would be easier if I was there and could help her find the right size, and depending on where they get it they might not need to know anyway...this was kind of a worst-ase scenario thing) Thanks again!

Re: Fiddle sizes
Have the child put the fiddle under her chin and stretch her left arm out. If she can curl her fingers over the scroll, it's the correct size.

Re: Fiddle sizes
We have a size guide at http://www.danceofdelight.co.uk/Livemusic/Violin/violins4.htm
- but basically the above advice is absolutely spot-on.

Re: Fiddle sizes
Thanks for that link Mark! I'm almost 18, and I've had the 3/4 size fiddle for quite a few years now. Now I know that I should probably upgrade.
