When I first started frequenting this site, I didn't even know what ITM meant. (oh the shame) being from the east coast of Canada, we get lots of tunes from different styles mixed together. I know that this is considered sacrilegious by some. One of my fiddle teachers was an Irish style player and I learned all sorts of interesting things from him. I guess my point is that as long as you like to play, maybe attend a session or 2 from time to time you're welcome on the site.....so it seems, no matter what kind of banter you may hear from some of the relics that have been on here forever
While we're on the topic...what DOES ITM mean? (I think I'm probably more out-of-the-loop than most people - I just play the music, I don't know any terminology!)
I like it. It makes playing The Sally Gardens in the same way, when uninspired and half-cut, for the numpteen hundredth time in one's life, seem a slinky and cutting-edge act. It has the cachet of MIT, or IBM, or some other such classy bunch of letters. (And some that aren't world-beaters, admittedly, like ITV or ICI - whatever became of it.)
I should have grown out of such things. But with advancing years comes a pathetic desire for one's pursuits to acquire a veneer of respectability , and mysterious acronyms for dubious people and pursuits readily provide this in the modern world...
There are lots of Scottish tunes that have come into the Irish repertoire and decent tunes made out of them. These include Lord Gordons, the Masons Apron and even Rakish Paddy (origianaly a Strathspey, can't remember it's name). So bring them on. It can only improve them.
bb, are sure you didn't mean ROTFL (Rolling On The Floor Laughing)? I'm not sure kids made all of them up, I remember first seeing them almost 15 years ago in internet chat rooms.
Thats the one I meant. I just think its a bit stupid - I mean - can you physically roll around on the floor laughing while typing in an internet chat room?
Do you mean all the good scottish tunes are already on the site, or all the good tunes on the site are scottish ?
I think both statements might be contentious.
Npt that there's anything wrong with a good scottish tune, or indeed a good anything tune.
Scottish music
Scottish music
Would I be doing an extremely bad thing if I were to enter Scottish music (it's traditonal!) on this site?

Re: Scottish music
We don't know where lots of music originated anyway - so much of it was borrowed and swapped cross borders, esp. between northumbria and scotland.

Re: Scottish music
Ignore their nonsense, gwendolen. ITM means In The Mood. When you're In The Mood, play whatever music you like.

Just as all mazurkas are Polish, all Polkas are Bohemian, all Waltzes are Austrian and all Germans are English.
