could anyone suggest the best place/ person to see about having a replacement nut fitted and set up done on a banjo in belfast. thanks.
i've just bought a second hand sully short scale which was orginally made for a left hander, the nut has been turned around for me but it doesn't really work., its also been used for heavier string gauge then i would prefer.
There is someone in the Strangford area who repairs instruments. I have seen a wonderful job he did on a trashed Gibson.
Can't remember his name at present, but I can find out if you don't get any other options.
thanks deeor, would appreciatate it if you could,
i have used the music shops in belfast before for a few things but never really been happy with any of them, would much prefer someones who actually plays the banjo.
Contact this guy- jcrepairs@hotmail.com . He is called Jerome and whilst he would be more used to guitars, bouzoukis etc he would be more than capable at a banjo setup. He is an excellent luthier and he wont rip you off

You could have a go at cutting one yourself. You can get bone blanks from music shops or from eBay. I've replaced mandolin and banjo nuts and it's not too difficult (bone is best - not plastic) I've got a couple of fine saws and some needle files plus a feeler gauge - all cheap from model shops. You need a vice to hold it for shaping with a file, prior to fitting. When you're adjusting the depth of the grooves after the nut is in position, you push the feeler gauge against the nut so you don't cut too deep. Here's a useful article about nuts: http://www.frets.com/FRETSPages/Musician/GenSetup/Nuts/nuts1.html
and another one about banjo nuts: http://members.tripod.com/~banjoist/Banjo%20Nut%20Setup.htm
Hope you get it fixed up one way or another!

Joe Diamond fixed my tenor banjo... excellent work and not hard to pay either.. Only thing is he's based in Maghera.
If you want his details give me a shout.. 'Not gonna put them on here just in case'
