Donegal Set

Donegal Set

Somewhere in November we had a Celtic night in our city. One of the groups that played there was Dervish.
They played a set of reels called the Donegal Set and I liked the first reel the most.
Does someone has that set on an album and could tell me the name of that reel?

Re: Donegal Set

I'm not sure about Dervish.

I looked up the "Donegal Set" at www.allmusic.com (can be a very useful site, by the way) and found the Cheiftains recent album, Water From The Well, contained a Donegal Set consisting of...

Willy's Single
King Of The Pipers
The Glen Road To Carrick

No way to tell if Dervish puts together their set the same way (King of the Pipers is a Jig, though...)

Re: Donegal Set

You'll find the Donegal set on Dervish's first album (the one minus Cathy Jordan) called "The Boys of Sligo". However the CD sleeve notes are sparse to say the least and just name the set rather than the tunes.

Re: Donegal Set

If this is the same set I have, the individual tunes are not named in the liner, but I know the first one is Paddy Fahey's #15, aka Peeler's Jacket, played way fast. I've always played it as a slow reel, because I first heard it that way by Martin Hayes on his "Lonesome Touch" CD - Track 1. I have the ABC for it and I'll post it if I find it's not already been posted. If this is not the same set, then maybe someone else will be more helpful.

A pox on all artists who record sets on CD and can't be bothered to name the individual tunes in the liner notes. $>{

Re: Donegal Set - follow up

Aha! I see that it has already been posted. It comes up in the search as Paddy Fahey's, the version dated June 21 2001, very similar to the version I play.

Re: Donegal Set

HI
the first reel is called Paddy's trip to scotland, the second the new rigged ship and the third Larry Radigan's bow. You can hear other versions of the 2 first by Altan.

Re: Pox on anglo concertina players

As well as not listing tunes, can I also put the pox on anglo players who do not put what key box they play their sets on. I had problems getting some of Mary MacNamaras "Blackberry Blossom" tunes going and eventually got a list of which boxes she used for which track.
Mary agreed it was a good idea to put these on.

Re: Donegal Set

Just a thought... Dervish tune up a semitone higher than standard which makes playing along with their C.D.s a problem. Whistlers will need to use an Eb whistle and those of us lucky enough to play instruments where it is possible need to fit a capo at the first fret to retain the original fingerings. I don't know how fiddlers will cope with it. I think Brian Rooney tunes sharp as well.

A pox on... ... ... (heh heh).

Re: Donegal Set

Does anyone have 'the Wynd you Know' by Ronan Browne, and can tell me what key or keys his Bansuris are? Particularly the one on which he plays Ar rabh tu ar an gCarraig. I'm mystified.(seems to be my permanent mind-state, I know.)

Re: Donegal Set

Regarding sharp tunings, etc. I have program called Trankcriber that allows (once the tune is in wave format) the pitch of the recording to be raised or lowered as necessary. I occassionally play with an Eflat flute which requires tuning my fiddle up a 1/2 step. The sound is very bright and bouncy, but I'm not sure how good it is for the fiddle. Most Frankie Gavin recordings are in this tuning which is how I became familiar with the pitch feature of Transkriber. The program also allows the tune to be slowed down while maintaining the pitch and the isolation of sections which cqan be looped.
