hi all
i am looking for contact info for charlie byrne, the bodhran maker! I got his address, but i wouldn`t just like to turn up at his door! It seems he makes a mean bodhran!
Anyway, here's where to find him: Charlie Byrne
8 Upper Mitchell Street, Thurles, Co. Tipperary, Ireland.
(i'm not sure if this is the same guy, but here's the email...)
charlesbyrne@ireland.com
and the number (not a Tipperary number):
Thanks Man
but i don`t think its the same Byrnes, these lads your on about are from dublin, and thy own a music shop. But then again Maybe i`m wrong! Lot easier on me if i am! The address is good though!
There is a "Charlie Byrnes" music shop in Stepehens street (off Georges Street) in Dublin. I was in there looking at bodhrans recently and, while she (his daughter) was giving me the range of bodhrans they had, she never mentioned that they made them themselves. That's not saying that it's not the same guy but I can't confirm it. Heres the address anyway:
Charlie Byrne the bodhran maker does indeed (or at least did) live in Thurles -- I know because I went to his house and bought a bodhran. He assured me that his bodhrans were made completely by hand -- he even slaughtered the goats himself!
But that was in 1988, and anything could have happened since then.
I've met Charlie Byrne the bodhran maker a couple of times, in Milltown and in Tubbercurry. Yes, he told me he goes out shooting deer for the skins. I can't comment personally on the quality, as I can't get a note out of a bodhran but, by all accounts, his drums are well worth the money.
i am charlie byrnes grandaughter and i justed wanted to that he passed away a few weeks ago. of corse we are all very upset and he will be missed so much by so many. rest in peace. x
I am sorry to hear, that charlie passed away. In the seventies I visited him a couple of times. I bought at least 15 of his bodhrans for friends here in the netherlands. I stil owe one of his bodhrans from that era. Indeed charlie shot the goats (two year old pucks are the best, he used to say) himself and than he tanned the skin. It was sensational to visit him and to try his beautifull instruments. I've never seen any better bodhrans than his. He knew exactly the kind of bodhrans I preferred, so I knew what to expect when I ordered some. I never will forget the friendly reception at his house and the warm notes he wrote that accompanied the shipments. A great man he was.
