Cunla meaning

Cunla meaning

I recently was given the Planxty Collection, a marvellous cd. One song in particular has captured my attention, Cunla. I'm sure it's the same, or very nearly the same, song as one known as Frieze or Friar's Britches, among other names. Can anyone tell me what Cunla means? The lyrics, of course, don't help much. It's such a fun tune, I'd love to know more about it! Thanks!

Re: Cunla meaning

I always thought Cunla was a name but must confess that I've never really looked at the lyrics to find out -- "Cunla, dear, don't come too near to me...". I'm sure Alice will be able to help you out here -- but if not, try the Mudcat for help there. (Yes, it's the Frieze Britches.) Beth Leachman teaches music at a Boulder elementary school, and I recently went and taught her music class how to dance two jigs. They're going to sing "Cunla" and dance the jig to the Frieze Britches at their next assembly! Should be very cute.
