Does anyone of the 'anoraks' here know of a good way to do an iTunes search of all the mp3's stored on my computer to find the recorded sets that might have that particular tune.
Before anyone suggests it I did think of going online to Irishtuneinfo (Alan Ng's site) and then searching for recordings of the tune and then seeing if I have that tune/recording.
I just thought there might be a nifty way of doing it on iTunes itself.
This is all assuming I am running Windows XP on a PC
Thanks for any help that might come out of this.
Cheers
Donough If you are using Apples 'iTunes' then one of the basic easy to use features is its ability to run a search for a particular tune, song etc. All you do is type in the name of the tune or a partial name ... iTunes doesn't have the ability to recognise a tune by humming the melody ... you have to enter basic information such as the name of the artist or album or tune name. I have a couple thousand tunes loaded on my Apple and I can locate them in seconds. I have to tell the computer though what I am searching for.
This is assuming that you've actually entered the tune titles in your iTunes database, either manually or by downloading them automatically from Gracenote (or whatever the online database is called these days). The automatic downloading can be done when you import a CD into iTunes (choose get track names from internet under the importing tab in the advanced section of the preferences - or whatever Windows calls it) or later by selecting the tracks and choosing get CD track names in the Advanced drop down menu.
Ohmigosh! I am a little embarrassed that I never spotted that the window above the word 'search' was where you type in a search.
This really works so well and has just solved a few problems for me - wish I had found this sooner
Thanks again to all
Now Jeremy maybe you'd like to destroy this thread or at least eliminate everyone who read it
Actually, Donough, you've opened a window for a question I have: When I download tunes into iTunes that I've gotten from a home-made CD (like one made by friends who record tunes at a session), they show up as "Track 01, Track 02, etc. I'd like to name them. How do I do this?
Or highlight the first track, choose Get Info. One of the tabs gives you a file-card layout into which you can type all sorts of information about the album and the track. When you're finished, choose Next to get to the next track. It's a bit quicker than clicking twice (which seems to require just the right timing between the clicks, otherwise it starts playing the track) for entering data for multiple tracks. Information about the album can be entered all at once by selecting all the tracks on the album and choosing Get Info.
I have made a point of going through albums to put in the actual tune names. Sometimes the automatic listing will just call it the "Silver Spear set" and not tell you the names of the other two tunes in the set. I check the inside sleeve for more info or check one or other website including here to get the best info. I also tend to try and correct the wrong listings on album sleeves where they come to light.
I think its really cute how the mp3 downloads I get from eMusic seem to label all the ITM as Reggae!
Another feature worth getting your head around is the artwork feature AND you can also use the notes fields on GET INFO to put in the information off album or CD sleeves that tends to get lost (or lyrics too).
iTunes automatically downloads artwork for albums if you are a member (ie have bought music through them). BUT you can fudge getting the artwork if you have your internet browser on....search whichever music store or label is likely to have the album....and do a 'copy' of the artwork. Then if you select ALL the tracks on the CD - and right click to get the GET INFO menu...it has a window for artwork. Paste the artwork.....and voile' - now you get the pictures of the covers as well.
I've been completely anal and done this for the 300 or so albums I have on iTunes....and it means you sort of replicate flicking through the old album covers when you run through your albums! Takes it to a different level.
I like the artwork feature too. It's like flipping through an album rack.
Meanwhile I will pretend I'm one of my teenage kids and laugh at Donough. Ha ha ha ha ha.
Donough, I see you are another eMusic ("reggae" indeed!) disciple from the Sth Fremantle sessions. I was also converted there. Hallelujah. Do you know about tradtunes.co.uk as well?

Re: iTunes Search
AS Jon says . Open your Library and then as you enter the name of the tune in the search pane you will see it picking out the tracks for you .

Hi Bren
Glad you got some pleasure out of my discomfort and that you are a born again emusic-man.
