So a while back I thought I heard that under 18's were not allowed in pubs after dark in Ireland.....is that still the case??? (I hope not!!!)
I'm planning a trip to Ireland next summer, will probibly be in Dublin for at least a couple days then maybe Clare.. I'm not really sure yet- anyways, I wanted to know if it's still even an issue to be a minor in a pub after a certain time. (well, obviously not super late- but say 10:00 or 11:00?)
thanks-
Rockyroader spot on . . no minors allowed after 9 pm . . if you were a diminished 7th you'd be alright while 10 . . although if you were a bit augmented, well thats a different story . .
i don't think you should worry about it, especially if you can play, and especially if you'll be around places during festivals. they don't card religiously like the states do anyway, and unless you're going to be causing a problem for the pub [drinking too much, picking fights etc] you'll probably be fine.
this is just from my experience, and to be fair, i only had a brief window when i was too young after the law was passed and i've only been over for a few weeks at a time anyway, but all i do is play if you're a young looking/acting 14/to-be-15 it could be more of an issue.
i think a generally successful policy is to go in places before the 9:00 cut-off and then stay around. that tends to work over here too...
I was in Ireland quite a few years ago as a 15 year old and it was only in Dublin that I had any problems. Coming from the States, it was pure pleasure to stop in at a pub in a small town and have a Guinness. I don't know whether that's still possible, but I had a great time in part because I was able to partake of the local culture.
"....as a 15 year old......it was pure pleasure to stop in at a pub in a small town and have a Guinness."
I presume, by 'Guinness' you mean lemonade or some such like.
There may be some localities where the gardaĆ (probably musicians or keen listeners themselves) would turn a judicious blind eye to an under-18 playing in a session past their bedtime. But I think serving alcohol to minors would be taken far more seriously, and not many publicans would - or should - take that risk.
LeoJ - that must of been a good few years ago. Or perhaps you just looked older than you were and it didn't occur to them to ask your age.
Are you joking, Spoon. Sadly or otherwise there is a 'healthy' culture of underage drinking in Ireland. And before you criticise me for my apparent tolerance, who is to blame? When the kids growing up see an adult culture surrounding pubs, when their parents in many cases, regularly get 'locked'. Of course, it's the thing to aspire to. Mind you, the Irish are in hal'penny place compared to many of our new citizens from Poland and the other east European States.
To return to the original question, I agree that if you're in early and playing with the group, that there is unlikely to be any problem unless you're making a nusiance of yourself. This applies even more so if you go to the trad festivals in Miltown, Drumshanbo etc. - often be 9 & 10 yr olds playing away well after hours in hotels and pubs.
My wite and I, the first time we went to Ireland with a harp and a fiddle, were really stunned to have problems with a well-behaved (mostly asleep!) toddler. I'm afraid the country went down several notches in my estimation. The only thing that's raised it again is that they've had the balls to ban smoking.

Re: Minors in pubs
I'm afraid it's the law, Hotfiddler - no under 15s(maybe under 18s, even ) after 9 pm.
It's not very strictly enforced in a lot of places, but other pubs have their curfew earlier.

stewpot beat me to the punch, that is the same thing I thought of when I saw the title of the discussion thread--a chord-based pun!

Re: Minors in pubs
Well, if they were in there after dark, the first thing they would need to think about getting, would be a lamp:

Re: Minors in pubs
Yeah. Its the coal dust and the helmets left lying around that causes the problems.

No... it's because they make the canaries nervous.
