Flute upgrade

Flute upgrade

I'm presently playing a Rutzen keyless flute and i'm considering upgrading to either a Ormiston.Hamilton or Seerey.
I'd like advice as to whether the Rutzen is a reasonable instrument and if i'd really notice any difference if i bought one of the others.
If anyone has experience of the other flutes i'd be interested in their opinion or comparison's i'm leaning more towards the Ormiston at the moment.

Re: Flute upgrade

From what I hear, the Orimiston will be the closest to what you have now. I don't mean quality I mean style. The Seerys are usually not that highly thought of, but Tom Doorley played on one until he got his Olwell. A Hammy will be drastically different than that Rutzen you are playing. In terms of quality, the Hammy and Ormiston will be an upgrade. You may not notice too much difference with the Seery.

I personally reccomend a Casey Burns, Dave Copley, or Terry McGee Flute.

Re: Flute upgrade

The biggest part of a flute' sound, provided it's decently made, is the player. Do you have anyone to try your flute who you know to be a good player? If they think it's fine, then moving onto a new flute really won't help you become a better player...only time and practice will.

Re: Flute upgrade

A not too humble opinion --

Spend your money as a deposit and get on the list for a first rate flute -- you will be happy you did. All the flutes you mentioned are decent to good second rate flutes, but none are first rate.

Re: Flute upgrade

Iain

I'am not familier with Rutzen instruments sorry.
I have played all the other three , and own a Hamilton 4 Key

Seerys are OK, a bit "harsh" in sound , in my opinion, also a bit rough in terms of craftmanship. ( craftpersonship ? )
A good player can great terrific tone off'em though ( Alan Docherty ex. Grada, Tom Doorley for eg. )

Ormistons are better than Seereys IMO, but Hamiltons are better still. I have a Rudall Carte & Co. 8key also, but now I've gone back to the Hamilton full-time. You can get a great reedy tone off'em without shouting at people, ( ie an intense searing tone off'em in the low notes, that you can hear in a session ) . Once you've grown into it ( they take a bit more filling ) they are easy to play, but it did take me a couple of years to be able for it.

Hammy's workmanship is top class also. Try one out for a couple of weeks ( not minutes ) if U can.

Hope that helps
Pat
