What box is this?

See above link. What sort of box is this and in what tuning?

Any ideas?

Thanks all.

Re: What box is this?

It says "Castagnari" on the side so I would guess it was a Castagnari. They are (I believe) an Italian made box and are becoming quite popular. I am pretty sure you can choose your tuning when you order it so you would probably be best asking Joe himself how he has it tuned unless someone here knows him and knows how he tunes it - Joe, are you out there?

(Cue Toffee Crisp wrapper)

Re: What box is this?

That last comment will probably baffle the "foreign" contingent - yes that includes you Americans and possibly also the Musos here who are still a foetus (you know who you are!)

Re: What box is this?

From what I remember of the Folkworks project (I don't really know Joe though I can ask someone who does) I think it was D/Gs that were leant out, which would make sense as the B/C or C#/D are more Irish systems. Also as the fingers appear to be on the C#, B or D row, unless it was in a very odd key, it'd make sense if it was D/G.

Re: What box is this?

I was wondering what a Toffee Crisp wrapper was, it's true. It sounds like I might like one. What is it?

Re: What box is this?

It is a chocolate biscuit sold over here (Google it) - there was an old advert with a seance. "Is someone out there? Can you here me?" Cue cheesy music and wrapper falling from overhead lamp shade. Idea was the ghost/spirit was eating one.

Re: What box is this?

the castagnari lilly (and that indeed appears to be the ID of the box in the photo) is one of literally dozens of the superbly-made, extremely responsive castagnari accordions. check out their site for an eyeful.

the lilly is distinctive for these features: a) it is extremely compact and light; b) it has a stepped keyboard in which the rows are at different heights rather than a completely flat, flush board with the two rows at equal height; b) the lilly is a one-reed accordion with a sound that is very dry akin to the dry, single-reed voice of a concertina [two-, three-, and even four-reeded boxes can also be dry-tuned, but that would be a larger dry sound than you'd get from the lilly].

some players adore the lilly for its small size. sharon shannon does or did play one, among other boxes. the other side of the equation is that, adorable and exquisitely responsive though it is, the lilly doesn't have a lot of lung power. it's great if you're alone, or performing alone on a stage with a quiet audience and a mike. at a session, this baby can barely be heard with a lone fiddle and it's touch-and-go with a flute. i myself sometimes play a lesser-known casti with a stepped keyboard, the larger, louder, but still compact Roma model, which has three middle reeds tuned to a true musette, but lightly without a ton of distortion. i also sometimes play a three-reed castagnari dinn 3, which is also very compact, but has a flat keyboard with buttons that are smaller and closer together, and not a heck of a lot of lung power even with those three reeds.

Sounds like you're a wealthy monster, cee.

Definition of a gentleman: someone who can afford a Paolo Soprani but plays a Lilly in sessions.

Re: What box is this?

Lilys are many things but quiet has never struck me as being one of them. There used to be a busker at Whitby who could shake buildings with his.

I've played them, but never at sessions so can't really judge - I suppose a lot depends on how loud and thick (texturally speaking) the session is.

I don't like Lily keyboards. They feel like portable typewriters.

Re: What dairy box is this?

Can we have some Penguin jokes as well as Toffee Crisp ones?
