hi
just wondering if anybody knows of a good pickup that you can install on a nylon strung guitar. im familiar with fishman, not anything else........and does drilling holes in your guitar take from the sound acoustic wise?????
On my guitar I've got an LR Baggs Dual Source pickup, which you can order over the internet. Drilling holes in your guitar does change the sound but this pickup is really good because you just stick it to the bottom of the inside of your guitar so you don't have to drill any holes in it. The only problem that I have with it is that I don't think you have any control over the bass or treble. I bought mine from www.stewmac.com for about £150. Before you buy it though you'll need to know the size of your guitars saddle slot because this pickup comes in two different sizes (either 3/32" or 1/8").
If you're here in the States, talk to John Fowler at Shoreline Music (www.shorelinemusic.com) for some advice. They have a lot of experience with the major brands, and he can give you a good idea of what would work for a nylon stringer.
The basic choic you'll have is between a pickup that goes under the saddle (UST) or one that attaches to your bridgeplate on the inside of your guitar. To my ear, the bridgeplate transducers sound a lot more natural and acoustic than USTs. They are a bit more prone to feedback though, though.
Amplification is always going to represent some sort of compromise, so think about what's most important to you (feedback resistance at louder volumes, more natural sound, etc.).
