I'm interested in attending the Catskills Irish week next year; but i have a problem. They're called my parents and thier inability to stay up past 8;45 in the evening...lol... but seriously, I need to attend fiddle camps where I can walk everywhere and not have to rely on my rents to give me a ride to wherever the happening sessions are. hence swannanoa- augusta- and im wondering about catskills. Are the evening sessions spread out? can you walk to them all? can you spend the entire week there w/out a car? are there any other good music camps that you don't need a car to get around?
Thanks ya'll!
The sessions and classes in East Durham are spread out over quite a wide area. I rented a car last summer and was very happy I made that decision. Some classes were like a fifteen minute drive away from the center of East Durham. And if you're out playing late, you don't want to be walking down those upstate New York roads in the dark.
The East Coast tionol -- also in East Durham but in the fall -- is completely contained at the Fern Cliff lodge. It's awesome and you don't need to drive anywhere, ever, the whole time you're there. They have fiddle classes and a substantial fiddle contingent as well as pipers.
You can pretty much always get rides arranged with others taking the same classes and same for going session hopping at night. It's great fun, worth the trip! Someone with a car is always going somewhere. They also have a message board outside the main building/ check in point and you can try to find people that way. You will most assuredely get where you need to go.
Tionol is a gathering of Irish pipers and fiddlers. The Tionol in East Durham, NY, is sponsered by East Coast Pipers will be held this coming weekend, October 6-9. There will be great piping, great fiddeling, great instruction, great concert, great sessions, great craic!

Re: Question about Catskills
There are always bikes for rent at the Catskill's week, and plenty of new-found friends to offer lifts to the sessions......
