I have a Hohner Erica B/C and would like to swap two of the bass buttons over, e.g. I would like to D where the C is and the C where the D is. I've never opened my box. Anyone know if this is an easy operation to perform or will I need a shop?
I've never opened a Hohner Erica, but the steps would be:
Draw out bellows pins to open bellows and access reedpans on bass end. Remove reedpans.
Locate and label the reedplates to be moved.
Melt the wax with a soldering iron, loose or turn pins holding the plates in place, swap plated over and reverse the above steps, sealing around the reed with fresh wax.
Be careful throughout not to damage the reeds themselves.
If this sounds daunting, get a specialist in.
What country do you live in? If it's the UK, Theo Gibb at The Box Place does this sort of thing all the time.
Mind you since its bass buttons that petsav asked about and C and D are usually on different buttons, its not just a matter of flipping reedplates. Reeds need to be replaced or retuned, and if its bass and chord there will be 10 reeds altogether that need to be altered. It is the sort of job I do very often.
I see you are in Cambrideg petsav, you would just need to send me the reedblocks, which is much easier than trying to post a whole instrument.
