I'll be going to dublin for the first time ever (only for five days) in the middle of January, and I will be looking for a cheap place to stay. Does anyone know if such thing exists in Dublin - searching the Net hasn't exactly cheered me up :(
I would be happy if someone would come up with a few suggestions .)
Take a walk up Gardiner Street next to the bus station; lots of cheap accommodation including hostels and decent B&Bs. You should get a room on spec no problem.
Dublin Central Youth Hostel, on Mountjoy St. (not Mountjoy Square - although there is a hostel there as well, The Celtic Inn) costs about 18 euros a night, or a bit less if you're a Hostelling International member. It's worth booking in advance, especially for 5 nights in a row - although January should be quieter than the summer months.
There is another hostel just round the corner - I forget the name - at about 20 euros a night
As Conan says, Gardiner St. is lined with hostels, starting from about 18 euros - but the quality varies considerably. When I arrived in Dublin this Summer, having tried the Youth Hostel, and the hostel nearby, I walked the whole length of Gardiner Street before finding a hostel with vacancies. But that was a Saturday evening in July - it should be easier in July. Nevertheless, if you want to stay in one place for 5 consecutive nights, booking is adviseable.
I went to Dublin for two nights about four years ago. Went out shopping with the missus on the first day, got bored by 11:00am, went into the Oliver StJean Gogarty where there's a non stop (paid) session.
Woke up the next morning with a row of 22 brand new folk CDs at the end of the bed I never remembered buying....
Even if the accomodation is cheap, don't reckon on your Dublin trip being so. Mind you, the craic was mighty...
Last two times passing through Dublin, stayed in the Jacob's Inn hostel near the bus. That cheap but a wee bit impersonal if you are traveling alone. There again I didn't spend much time there - just a few hours sleep. It does provide breakfast of a dink and a muffin
Try searching for hostels on line as there are several web sites that you can look at most of the Dublin hostels and book them. I use them all the time and had no problems.
I do agree though accomodation is a marginal cost of a trip to Ireland.
Dublin Hostelling International (An Oige) on Mountjoy St, which "spoon" recommends, is the best bet for the price, cleanliness and other services. But it's a bit of walk from the centre and hard to find.
Well, (plug, plug, plug), dare I suggest that you might buy a copy of the Rough Guides 'Dublin Directions', where all your questions will be answered?
I visited numerous hostels in writing the book's accommodation section.
Although Abraham's Hostel on Lower Gardiner Street is a pretty decent place (and nearby Isaac's and Jacob's Inn are too), it's a not especially enticing area. And the same can be said about the area where the Dublin Hostelling Internation is.
Instead, why not try the Litton Lane Hostel, just off Bachelors Walk, near O'Connell Bridge, It's bang in the centre, but tucked away up a little lane, so doesn't suffer from noise pollution.
Alternatively, please send me a private email for other recommendations.
Nearly all the hostels the length of Gardiner street are now just catering for eastern european immigrant workers. You could try Isaacs Hotel near Busarus, its also right on the Luas line , very handy for Hughes Bar and Cobblestone!

I meant January, of course.

Copo24,
Sorry, it's not me on the globetrekker channel, though I share some of the presenter's views.
