Re: Senior All Ireland Champions '06 Naomh Padraig C. Band
Hi guys. Just wondering crazycordie if you heard the competition and if you judge that naomh padraig didnt deserve to win then on what grounds?
They had a new transparent judging system this year which is a step in the right direction, what did you think of that?
Re: Senior All Ireland Champions '06 Naomh Padraig C. Band
Well it was modelled a little like the eurovision.... each judge gave points to his/her 7 favourite bands. 1 point for 7th, 2 for 6th, 3 for 5th, 4 for 4th, 5 for 3rd, 7 for 2nd and finally 11 for first. This gave the crowd a chance to watch the result unfold and also gave an idea of how unanimous the decision was. 4 out of 5 judges gave naomh Padraig first, Allow getting the other decision. It was definitely a step in the right direction however I feel that there is too much of a gap between the points for 1st and 2nd. Allow deserved to be closer.
Re: Senior All Ireland Champions '06 Naomh Padraig C. Band
well Tony i played in it last year for one thing. our band didn't deserve anything but Naomh Padraig certainly were not the best band. i think that was also shown by the reaction of the crowd when nobody bothered to wait and hear them play again at the end. After last year it turned alot of people off the competition. true i didn't hear them this year but i didn't have to. how many bands have gotten two in a row and not got the third?? They wouldn't tie the shoelaces of great bands who have won the three in a row.
Re: Senior All Ireland Champions '06 Naomh Padraig C. Band
I'll agree with you there crazycordie. Having played in the compeition a few years ago myself also. Was at the ceili band competition last year and felt that they weren't the best band either.
Re: Senior All Ireland Champions '06 Naomh Padraig C. Band
Was at the band competition last night, veru enjoyable. I had the Sligo band (inisfree)first until Naomh Padraig played, end of contest they were clear winners. Brilliant performance. The voting system gave people the opportunity to see the way the adudicators voted. 4 gave NP 1st and One gave them a 2nd.
Well done NP and now its all there for someone else to step up to the mark.
One thing though. A Ceili band function is to play for Dancers, Is there any catergory for "danceability "in the scoring system.Listening to the bands last night there were very few that would have got me dancing. The tempo is very fast, No swing or lift. tunes and ornamentations are chosen to show how together they can play. Give me the Tulla any day.
Re: Senior All Ireland Champions '06 Naomh Padraig C. Band
I think that set and ceili dancers should be the judges of these competitions - set the band up on a stage, put 200 set and ceili dancers on the floor in front of them and see how they meet the requests of the dancers. A ceili band should know what music to play for at least the commonest dances and when to stop!
Re: Senior All Ireland Champions '06 Naomh Padraig C. Band
Ceolgal. The Oranmore band gave a good performance and they did get on the scorebord which is an indication that the judges liked what they heard. Each Judge gave marks to only 7 bands and thinking over it I think only 8 bands got on the scoreboard at all, an indication that they agreed on the top 8 bands. (as you would expect). NP and Ennisfree (for me) had something extra, after that there were 4 or 5 in the chasing group (Oranmore included). The top bands are able to grab you with the first bar in each of their selection and they have a presence on stage , communicating with the Audience and the Music and the other members of the band. They also have Good Piano and Drums which is often overlooked and can make or break a band.
Re: Senior All Ireland Champions '06 Naomh Padraig C. Band
For the benefit of the ignorant, could someone tell us a bit about where the Naomh Padraig and Allow bands are from (and sorry, but how do you pronounce the first?!)
Re: Senior All Ireland Champions '06 Naomh Padraig C. Band
Think its pronounced nave paw-rig.
Thought new voting system was very good. It give transparency to the whole thing. Only complaint was that it took from the suspense of the whole thing.
I initially thought that NP played a bit fast last year but when I heard it on Ceili house I had to admit they were good. Allow were very good last year so I was expecting a real contest this year.
2006 - Allow were very very good again. NP were so lively though. They have a lovely swing to their music. I have to say, its good to see two bands that are not from Clare putting in a really good performance. Love the Clare style but they're a bit like Kerry in the football!
I think the Ceili House broadcast will be some time in October. Maybe those who weren't at the competition will be able to have a listen and give an informed opinion.
