Favorite concertina bands?

Favorite concertina bands?

Granted, the last thing I need right now is to buy more CDs (I just came back from Milwaukee Irish Fest, and also went on a buying spree at CD Baby), but I would really like to get my hands on some recordings of great Concertina players. Any names spring to mind?

Re: Favorite concertina bands?

My favourite players would be:

Chris Droney
Francis Droney
Noel Hill
Michael O Raghallaigh
Edel Fox

I've heard Tony O'Connell was good too but have never heard him. Also, John Naughton's recordings may be helpful even if he isn't the world's best player.

Re: Favorite concertina bands?

Are there recordings of John Naughton? How does one get them?

Some of these suggestions might be a little too hard core trad considering the use of the word "band" in the question.

There are also some nice albums by Jacqueline McCarthy, Tommy McCarthy, Cathy Custy, Gerdie Commane (w/ Joe Ryan), Gearoid o hAllmhurain and Claire Keville (w/ Eithne ni Dhonnile and John Wier).

Re: Favorite concertina bands?

Concertina BANDS? They did exist in England. The Salvation Army had them a long time ago. Otherwise, I seem to remember seeing a record of a concertina band based somewhere in Yorkshire, possibly Mexborough; Topic Records was the company most interested in recording such things at the time. Their back list might be accessible on the internet.
This is obviously beside the point if your interest is in individual players, but I thought it worth rising to the subject heading.

Re: Favorite concertina bands?

Wow, thanks for the lists everyone! I'm going to conduct a search for these artists tomorrow... say goodbye to my productivity at work.

Re: Favorite concertina bands?

Well there have been some great ones.
My favourite concertina player is Pádraig Rynne and closely followed by Michael O Raghallaigh.
This is because I think they have started new styles on these instruments and brought new imagination and soul to these instruments.I

I also like Noel Hill and John Williams quite alot.
As for bands with concertinas.....modern bands?
Providence
Cian
Turas
Solas
Buille

There have been alot of great concertina albums of late also after a pretty long droubt.
Again I love Michael O Raghallaighs,
Bye A While by Pádraig Rynne
and Edel Fox has some nice stuff on her new one with RónanO Flaherty
Buille with Niall Vallely
Tony O Connel and Andy Morrow

What do other people think of these players as a matter of interest?

....Dont tink I have come across a concertina discussion on this site before

Re: Favorite concertina bands?

Just saw Edel Fox sitting in with Cherish the Ladies the other week in Newport, RI. This young girl is an outstanding musician--if there is justice in the world, she will have a bright future.

Re: Favorite concertina bands?

I'm not sure if John Naughton has recorded anything but I do know that he appeared on "Siar an Bothar" at least once. Another good concertina player I've just remembered is Sonny Murray.

Re: Favorite concertina bands?

Not forgetting these two of my favorites

Dancing on Silver by Tim Collins
and
An Tri Is A Rian featuring Claire Kevill

as flutesalad suggests, concertina bands are very much in evidence in England but they usually play band arrangements of marches etc. in parts and often play tenor, baritone and bass instruments (Yes, you can get these in anglo flavour as well). The arrangements can be pretty complicated and you can be one to a part so the bands are usually for dot readers only.
I have done it, but playing parts on anglo is a challenge to say the least. There are some exceptions, but these bands are usually limited to english or duet concertinas.

Re: Favorite concertina bands?

Don't forget Tim's sister, Miriam Collins. She's a lovely player as well.

Re: Favorite concertina bands?

Alistair Anderson! Plays English concertina and mainly plays Northumbrian music (which I happen to think is a good thing), and is one of my favourite examples of someone who plays with that magic ingredient......lift.
