Irish songs

Just an idea for the pot, ive been to sessions where songs are just as welcome as tunes are, I know there are other resources around the net but there all mumbled jumbled. Wouldn’t it be good if as well as a tunes database on this site we had a folk songs database because there are literally thousands of them as well and I am sure some of you agree that songs need preserving as just as much as tunes. It could include basic guitar chords and the sheet music for the song airs and melodies etc.......

obviously it would take some co-operation and work from us all for collecting the songs and it would mean work for webmasters and i don’t want to put them under stress or do something they don’t or for which people using the site don’t want etc....

anyways just a passing idea what ya reckon?

Re: Irish songs

Jeremy has always tried to focus the website on Irish dance tunes, although we do discuss songs and singing from time to time. I wouldn't mind having the web site expand, but I am content the way it is, as there are a lot of other web sites that address the singing end of things, but no site that addresses tunes as well as this one.

Re: Irish songs

NO,NO NO NO NO. Go and start a singing sesion site. Link it to this if you like, but don't bugger up what's here. Singing sessions are completly diffferent beasties to tune sessions and the two don't mix very well. The odd song sung in a session is a wonderful thing, but it ain't what a session is primarily about. Too many songs wreck a session, but the occasional one sung well is a delight. Lets keep things as they are!

Re: Irish songs

one nice thing about mudcat is that folks are always ready, willing and able to translate songs written in irish, scots gaelic etc.

Re: Irish songs

ive seen mudcat org before it dosent give chords just the melody lines and sometimes learning chords by ear can be hard. neways it was just an idea, and i agree tune sessions wouldnt be the same if a song followed a tune evertime, same viseversa if it was a singing session. But i have been to sessions where tunes and songs have been played and its been absoltely great! especially when all the musicians join in with the melody lines and accompnianment gets a real good sound, but then i suppose youve got to be lucky and be at a session where the musicians like to play along to songs.neways just an idea thought it would be good if this was like a site for everything irish :)

sorry for the typos no time to correct

Re: Irish songs

Ya know, the purpose of a session is to provide an opportunity for musicians to share tunes with each other. Songs are welcomed as an OCCASIONAL break.

But they're not necessary. Any session that does have an occasional singer needs to be very wary of prima donna singers hijacking the agenda - it's about tunes. If singers and extroverted, audience participation-oriented nitwits find that boring, they're perfectly weclome to suck my d---.

Re: Irish songs

As both a fiddler and singer, not all singers are Prima Donnas. (I have no opinion on whether or not to put songs on here, BTW). A good Irish singer is focused on the music and not his or her self, and not "hijacking the agenda". If you do have a singer like that, that's their problem and they need to step away. Or occasionally be pushed.

And for songs being welcomed as an occasional break-I hope you mean for your fingers. Because they are certainly not your personal bathroom/drink breaks (and I know one singer in particular who has had that happen to her many a time). Besides, most singers I know prefer song circles anyway...
