We're waiting to be green - let's hear the Miltown tales!
Come on then, let's hear all those juicy Miltown stories. You know you want to rub it in, don't you?
I already heard that Gnasher had a cracking tune with Jackie Daly, amongst others, but who amongst you had the most memorable session?
Come on now, this is the one time of the year when it is OK to name drop!
We all want to hear how it went, & tales of mighty sessions are just what the doctor ordered to help kick start, what has been a sleepy Mustard page for the past week, back into gear.
Photos &/or sound files would be much appreciated & Video clips would be better still, but we'd settle for a few tales of great success or even of the mighty session missed - the one that got away!
Re: We're waiting to be green - let's hear the Miltown tales!
Well, I'm not one to rush in where angels fear to tread - but myself and the lad went down for the week. Camped out at Spanish Point with friends. Played a few tunes, learnt a few tunes, had a few pints, made a few friends, swam in the ocean, bought a few trinkets. He did a box class with Colm Gannon and had great craic by all accounts, not sure hown much he learnt though, except that playing a few tunes is good fun. I thought it was about time I got some instruction of the flute and did a class with Desi Wilkinson and Fintan Valelly doing a two hander. I think they reckoned that were paid to do two tunes a day each handling a class by them selves so they stuck to that plan anyway so the old head was spinning a bit afterwards. Can I sue them for insomnia or the lads who started playing Neil Young at 5 in the morning.
Did go along to the Central on Tuesday but I must admit it was an Irish 2 o'clock when I got there, i.e. nearer 3. Asked a few people but mostly teenagers playing in front lounge. Perhaps the Sessioners went somewhere else?
Re: We're waiting to be green - let's hear the Miltown tales!
Ha! Head is spinning with tunes and memories...
I was taking flute classes with Gary Hastings, as a relative newbie (lower intermediate class). In the beginning it felt a bit awkward, as I found myself in a class with most people being half my age, and at least half of them being twice as good on the flute. But I really enjoyed the teaching style of Gary and don't regret staying in his class.
The town of Milltown Malbay was a mad musician's dream. Music everywhere, musicians everywhere, friends and would-be friends. Traffic jams, no parking space. Walking from one pub to another to find a session to play at or to listen to. Eating the best chips and burgers East of New York.
Bellbridge and the Crosses of Annagh, whenever we went there, were a real mayhem huge sessions, huge crowds and unbearable noise. However, we usually got there pretty late, so maybe earlier on the conditions there were more human. On Thursday we went to the Crosses and witnessed a leviathan session of several dozen musicians, with all applicable additions, including bongo drums, and on top of it all sat Cathy Jordan beating the oarsmen's rhythm on the bodhran.
However, we have seen some amazing musicians in Bellbridge, and stayed there for few hours squeezed into the wall, listening to young professionals having a session.
As to name dropping, I was lucky to be playing together with such stars as Conan McDonnell, Trish Clark a.k.a Tize, and some more really fine players from Limerick, Dublin and Brittany.
Barry, seems like sessioneers in Milltown acted according to a strict schedule. Around 2-ish was still a time for food and siesta - sessions started just after 3, and later it was difficult to find somewhere to sit in. The place where I played the most was the cellar of Malone's Pub - with a small group of sessioneers, and just few punters who would come down to listen to the music.
Re: We're waiting to be green - let's hear the Miltown tales!
Well Hi Jane,
didn't you join us in church on Saturday morning for a bit of after mass entertainment? Were you there, I was smiling when the Parish Priest came up for a chat. What was that fifing tune that Gary taught you - sounded like something different from the usual.
Re: We're waiting to be green - let's hear the Miltown tales!
Janek you're too kind, mwaha! I probably owe you some drinks anyways ;)
A lot of tunes, a lot of drink consumed (Malone's ran out of vodka on Friday night, oh the horror!) and a lot of craic. Best session of the week for me was probably Clancy's on Tuesday night... great friends and amazing music; Janek (guitar), Kasia (fiddle), Rory & Ciaran (great pipers from Dublin), Michael (guitar), Colleen (whistle), Jess (fiddle), Domhnall (accordion) & we were also joined by the amazing Ciaran Somers (flute), amongst others. Ned was on top form with some truly hilarious songs. Had some great times too down in the basement of Malone's messing around with Conan & a few other nutcases (Colm de Brun, if you're out there, Colleen & I have photographic evidence of your love affair with the broom!)
Fondest memories (aside from sessions) include the gutter outside Mace with Colleen White and the five Dublin lads eating grease in various forms from Dado's at about 2.30am Monday night/Tuesday morning. There was also an incident involving Colleen, a tea cosy, a whistle, a beach umbrella and a towel that won't be forgotten in a hurry.
I was also looking forward to seeing Rory, Ciaran and Michael staying off the drink until 10pm one night, as per their pact... but we went into Clancy just before 5pm and were immediately offered a free drink, so that plan flew out of the window. The boys didn't even let the poor man get to the end of the question before they had the order of 'apple chardonnay' in.
Sadly didn't make it to what sounded like a legendary session on Friday night; met Josie Harrington heading home at gone 10am saturday morning from tunes!
Conan, was it that we're 98% banana, bananas are 98% human, or chicken burgers are 98% kangaroo? I don't remember.
Re: We're waiting to be green - let's hear the Miltown tales!
Lizzy, we missed you there, too! I hope we will have a chance to meet soon. Btw, your e-mail account keeps bouncing off my mails. Did you finally get the CD I've sent you?
I must agree, Trish - Tuesday in Clancy's was memorable. Not only for the fun and atmosphere, but also for the duration of it all - we started out at 5 pm and played until 1 am or so... And as to drinks you owe me, we'll surely settle this issue when we meet...
Rory, Ciaran and Michael - if you happen to read this, I'm really sorry I missed a chance to say a proper goodbye! See you soon guys.
Re: We're waiting to be green - let's hear the Miltown tales!
Janek & Tize,
It was good to meet you guys last week. I really enjoyed meeting u guys last week and enjoyed the music! To be honest, if I had to sit there listening to Rory and Ciaran all day I'd have lost the will to live!
The music on Tuesday evening was outstanding. It was a great learning experience and Im determined to go back next year with the confidence to take out a banjo instead of a guitar!
Re: We're waiting to be green - let's hear the Miltown tales!
I understand Michael... whilst they're fantastic players, the pair of them talk some dung, as they'd say ;) Though I can't deny that I enjoyed hearing the regular updates on the state of Ciaran's bladder throughout the Tuesday night... ahem...!
If you're anything like as quick a learner as the pair of them you'll be flying it on the banjo next year. It confused me a little bit 'cos I was sure when Rory said he'd a friend coming over, he said you played banjo, and I didn't even get a glimpse of you on one, shame.
Glad you're coming back again next year anyways, the music was fantastic and aside from anything else, you lads are the best craic... never thought I'd enjoy sitting in a gutter quite so much! Colleen sends her love too, we missed you lads the rest of the week... you were the only dossers who made us look steady on the drink!
Re: We're waiting to be green - let's hear the Miltown tales!
Nice one Trish!
Im working on finding someone to give me banjo lessons here in Bedford. I think Ive got someone but shes playing it cool. I'll have to turn the charm big time! Oh yeah!
Tell Colleen that she shouldnt be ashamed of her old man. Hes still her dad!
The biggest shame of the week is that u gals never saw me dance!
Re: We're waiting to be green - let's hear the Miltown tales!
How could anyone resist your charm?! And if you dance too... well...! And I don't think it was so much her Da that Colleen was ashamed of, I think it was all her cousins/uncles/aunties... in all fairness, that girl has THE biggest family. Fair play to you for that stroke of genius - there's a running joke that won't be forgotten for a while!
And yes, if I should ever become mentally ill enough to head south of Derby, I will indeed give you a shout ;o) Same to yourself if you're heading up this way or back across the pond (in all honesty I'm in Limerick & Dub more than I am borEngland, as I so fondly call it).
Quotes from Miltown that will stay with me forever;
Paul: "Look Ciaran, a crane..." (in a truly Paul, spacy way)
Colleen: "I'm not gonna lie Patricia, I don't understand a lot of what's going on now"
Rory's summaries of his playing: "Every note like a car crash" and "I played like a drunken leper"
T's description of Tipp as being "like Narnia"
and your definition of a stain!
Re: We're waiting to be green - let's hear the Miltown tales!
Hello again Trisha,
Rory has a few good quotes alright but I have to mention what our taxi driver said to him on the way home from the Bell on Tuesday night. Rory abused everyone on the bus on the way home and then switched from Jeckill into Hyde and politely asked the driver to drop us directly home to our house 3 miles outside Miltown. The driver turned to me and said "I'll drop u boys home alright if you can manage to shut him to f**k up!".
It was the first few minutes of silence we had from Rory in 4 days!!! As far as Im concerned, thats the future of customer service.

Hi guys 'n' gals! Yeah what a great time. Tish I think it was "humans are 98% cheeseburger". Ok at least after a week of eating "Ultimate" Burgers.
I think they're called Ultimate because they're probably the last thing you'll ever eat.
Anyway cheers for the tunes and the craic. Lotsa love to Colleen, Jess of the fabulous fiddle case and of course to Janek and Kasia, the most Irish Polish people I've ever met.

Re: We're waiting to be green - let's hear the Miltown tales!
Tize,
I don't really know him but saw him play at a Christmas music concert in dublin last year. It was in a church on St.Stephen's green and he played with an organist and cello player. It was one of the best musical things I've seen in years. I havn't heard the pipes played in a church before but it was gorgeous. Then I found out that he is only playin the pipes a short while. I heard Mikie Smyth talking to an American in the cobblestone one night and he was raving about this guy who learned to play the pipes to a very high standard in only a few years. It was this guy he was talkin about.
Anyway that's all I know but when I heard th name it rang a bell.

Re: We're waiting to be green - let's hear the Miltown tales!
Yeah Rory's sickening alright, in the best possible way! He must've misheard when someone told him it was supposed to take him 21 years to learn the pipes... that's years, not months! He's a top guy too, but sometimes frustrates me in that he really doesn't have a clue of just how good he is and he's very bad at taking compliments about his playing! I dunno if he uses this site but I'll pass those remarks onto him anyways keith, I'm sure he'll well appreciate it

But you have to come visiting to Limerick again next year anyways.
Re: We're waiting to be green - let's hear the Miltown tales!
Hi All
What a great week. Was playing in the central all week in the afternoons with wonderfull young kids. Such amazing tallent in the hands of those kids. The future of music is secure. Noticed one thing though, a lot of the kids played only one tune at a time and did not seem to be familiar with the concept of changing tunes. With the licencing laws in Ireland and kids not being allowed in pubs after 10pm (most sessions during the year start at about 10!) I think they are not getting any exposure to sessions!!!
Had tunes with some greats this week, Cathal Mc Connell, great as always. Brendan Begley in the westbridge, what a singer and player and all round Gent. Maurice and Ben Lennon, Ciaran Hanrahan and Paddy Canny all in the back of O Loughlins and 3 in the audience. John Kelly, Vincent Griffin and Peter Mackey.
Not to mention you guys and Gals.... Esp Conan. Thanks to you all for the tunes and good company and hope you enjoy the CD.. Gerry
Re: We're waiting to be green - let's hear the Miltown tales!
I stayed in an appartment with a German woman who I met through this site, it worked out really well as she was on the morning shift, getting up to hitch a lift to classes and I was on the later shift arriving back at about 3-4am. Thanks for the accommodation Sandrina it was great to meet you!
I saw too many good people playing to mention and clogged my head up with tunes, bits of tunes and even smaller bits of tunes until they were spilling out.
I managed to stay an extra day because I clutched at the first feeble excuse for being too late to catch the ferry from Rosslare back to Wales. It did mean that I had a really rough crossing on the Saturday night and I get sea sick so took maximum dose of pills and got my head down and actually felt ok.
Spent the next week with severe withdrawal symptoms but it's ok, I'll be back over in Feakle hopefully for more.
Re: We're waiting to be green - let's hear the Miltown tales!
I went to dance sets to the Mulcahy Ceili band in the markee and found that Oisin McDiarmada playing alongside Michelle Louise and Mick. It was glorious mucic to dance to but there were only 1.5 -2 sets there all afternoon. I'll never forget it though worth the cost of the week for just that 1 experience and there were many highs
Re: We're waiting to be green - let's hear the Miltown tales!
Enough already! Stop! Stop! Alright, I think we're all green enough by now, no more, pleeez! Especially that last one telboy, sounds great. I think we all just dream of that 'one experince that makes it all worth while' - magic!

Enough already! Stop! Stop! Alright, I think we're all green enough by now, no more, pleeez! Especially that last one telboy, sounds great. I think we all just dream of that 'one experince that makes it all worth while' - magic!
