Are there any session around in Dublin that start from before 9 O clock because I'd like to get in to some sessions but, being under 18, I can't before 9 O Clock.
I'm 27, but scared to go into the Cobblestone! Paddy, are you looking for sessions with other under-18 musicians, or the ones where you can play tunes in the afternoon or early evening?
Slainte - I once went to the cobblestone, armed with my mandolin. When Katherine McEvoy and family turned up and placed themselves in the session corner, I decided that the mandolin would not be leaving its box that night. I hid it somewhere behind my bar stool, and relaxed to an evening of great music. When the musicians were finished playing, I got up and left, waving goodbye. Katherine McEvoy, catching sight of my mandoilin case said, "You'd an instrument all along and you never played it? You're very bold!".
Perhaps you *should* be afraid of going into a pub where you even get told off for *not* playing.
Spoon, I don't hesitate to take my instruments out of my backpack in most places (except Galway and Ennis), but my flute was sleeping on the table one night in Belfast this March with a young concertina player Jason O'Rourke and fabulous friends. They were a nice buch of people to allow this exotic-looking tourist to sit next to them.
I'm not shy. I'd be well up for a good session. I think I'll try out the Cobblestone sometime.
I do go to a local (well, most local) Comhaltas branch but the session begin at 9 O Clock and I need my Dad to bring me out. I'd just like to go to a session were I'm allowed in to play and learn a few tunes without being told off. If there's sessions in the Cobblestone before 9 (which I think permits me to go) then I might try it out. Although I've heard it was a drinkers venue really.
I must agree. Ive had great fun playing all around Ireland.
Ennis and Galway can be pretty darn intimidating.
I dont think theres anything wrong with watching and not playing. If anything it pushes you harder to be a better musician. One day I say! Im gunna sit in with these guys..
practice......
The cobblestone on sundays, sesiun starts from about one oclock afternoon(opening time) and there then follows another 3 sesiuns back to back after that, each sesiun approx 3 hours!
also you might want to try the comhaltas sesiuns in monkstown. i think its listed here under sessions!
Paddy, you're always more than welcome at the Wednesday, Monkstown session - in fact you're absence over the past couple of weeks has been noted (only joking!!!)
I hope to be back soon Bannerman. Like I say, it's a little difficult for me to get out unless I have the lift from my da.
I was talking to a box player I know (kind of) today and she said that I could go out to the Cobblestones on Sunday. The worst that can happen is I'm told to get out. And then big deal, fair enough, I won't argue.
up until recently there has been a young persons session in the back room of the cobblestone on a saturday afternoon. its good craic and no pressure at all, hopefully it will be up and running again soon.
Oliver St. John's lets kids in, but then you're forced to listen to that music... I'm not even going to describe it. But when I went in, if you go before 9, and then stay, they don't mind at all.... Actually I think they had a sign up that said "under 21 not allowed" (why?) but they still let me in.

Re: Under 18 session in Dublin
The Thursday night session at The Cobblestone usually begins around 7pm and there's also a Sunday afternoon session in the same pub.
All the best,
Geoff
