Whistle and/or flute teachers in Ireland

Whistle and/or flute teachers in Ireland

Hello everyone... I must thank you for everything lately. This has been a wonderful place to come to for support and advice.

I have another question. I will be in Ireland for a little over 2 months this summer... primary purpose is to study the whistle (and flute). I will be attending Willy Clancy school.

I am a new player, have been practicing more on whistle than flute, and I feel that I am doing pretty well.

I can say that I am very determined and absolutely LOVE playing. I can't get enough of it and would play every waking moment of my day if I were able.

I am looking for a teacher, or two, or three (I know it's best to stay with just one, but I will not have that liberty as I will be travelling as well) that might be willing to work with me. I would gladly travel to them, stay in a hostel and work with them for a short while before moving on.

I would love the experience of learning from different teachers and gathering information along the way.

I am not sure if this philosophy will work, but I am hoping it will!

I could use, from you, advice on this theory AND suggestions of your favorite teachers in Ireland. Again, I will gladly go to them as I will be there to experience and see the country as well.

About me: I appreciate patience with question asking (I like to), understanding that I am an artist and am VERY left brained... it's hard for me to process right brain issues regarding music... lamens terms are best for me... I practice A LOT. I am a teacher and feel that I know how to learn well... take criticism and actually enjoy it... So, that's about me...

Suggestions will be really appreciated.
Thank you again, everyone :)

good luck with that! you're so fortunate to be able to go on such a trip. you'll have to let us all know how it went when you get back.

in addition to here, have you asked at the chiff and fipple whistle forum? double post into the flute forum as well, if you want a flute teacher. the link is http://chiffboard.mati.ca

Re: Whistle and/or flute teachers in Ireland

There are two summer schools in the two weeks after Willie Clancy - The South Sligo Summer School in Tubbercurry http://www.sssschool.org/ and then the Joe Mooney Summer School in Drumshanbo http://www.joemooneysummerschool.com/ There are some fantastic tutors on both whistle and flute at both of these and there are loads of opportunities to play in sessions as well.

And you can then round off the month by heading to the Ulster Fleadh. http://www.ulsterfleadh.com/ :-)

Re: Whistle and/or flute teachers in Ireland

wow, two months. that's great. i'm jealous.

breandan's suggestion about finding various workshops would probably be one of your best strategies. but if i was in your shoes, i would also consider parking yourself in either Ennis or Galway City and do some "asking around," ie go to various sessions then at the right moment ask some local if they have any recommendations. try music shops too. However, I wouldn't rule out going right to the masters themselves. Hell, why not try contacting Mary Bergin (lives i think in Salthill outside of Galway) or introducing yourself to Hammy Hamilton who lives outside of Cork City. yeah, they might say no, but what if they said yes? and even if they said no they might be able to recommend a suitable sustitute.

Good luck!

PS i have Hammy's email if you need it.

Re: Whistle and/or flute teachers in Ireland

Hi meika, welcome to playing the whistle and flute. I took the flute up 2 years ago and love it. You will find some great teachers around Clare during the Festivals. The workshops are great places to learn. Eamonn Cotter and Garry Shannon are two great tutors of the flute and they are usually involved in these workshops. John Kelly is another great teacher as well. Best of luck and keep practising! Ill be attending those workshops myself.

Meika, a word of advice.
While I believe that everyone on this site is fantastic, you do get the odd mad guest. You can be contacted through the site here via your profile box. Dont post your personal e-mail address up on the site, you never know who is logging on.
Best to be safe than sorry.

Re: Whistle and/or flute teachers in Ireland

thanks blas! However, the email I posted I created for junk email, not my personal email, (no offense to anyone here) so, if that happens, it's not connected to any personal information and I can always change it whenever I want. Thank you for your help!
