fiddle tune ideas for a wedding??

fiddle tune ideas for a wedding??

Dear session members

I've been asked to fiddle at a friend's wedding in July. cringing at the thought it's time to work up about 20 min of music to play them from church hall to reception as the party walks through the village.

would love your top tunes for this kind of setting. doesn't have to be irish, of course, I'm open to all suggestions - solo fiddle that is!

many thanks
p

Re: fiddle tune ideas for a wedding??

Haste to the Wedding
St Kilda Wedding
Breton Wedding March

The Home Ruler (:-))

& for something a little bit different:
I buried my wife & danced on her grave :-D
Well, you get tired of all the usual answers, don't you?

Re: fiddle tune ideas for a wedding??

How about 'Tabhair dom do Lámh' and 'Ag Críost an Síol' during the mass. 'Haste to the Wedding' would be a good one to play as you're walking through the village.

Re: fiddle tune ideas for a wedding??

I have always thought that the Leslie's March of Oscar and Malvina would be a fantastic wedding tune, three parts that build into a truly joyfull whole. If I had known of it at the time of my wedding I would have wanted it in the programme somewhere.

Re: fiddle tune ideas for a wedding??

This is traditional Swedish March, often used for weddings.

Also used every midsummer when we carry the maypole around the village before putting it up. (Yep, I know sounds a bit crazy, but it's tradition! :-) )

You should (hopefully) hear it (Gånglåt från Äppelbo) when you open this link

Re: fiddle tune ideas for a wedding??

How about:

Star of the County Down (take your pick as to what timing, but I think it sounds lovely as a waltz - Scottish band Caerketton do a great version)

Da Slockit Licht (a lovely Shetland tune - maybe a bit mellow though).

Ca the Yowes (a beautiful Scottish folk song - Breslin Chasse does an absolutely stunning version - let me know if you want his version in abc format as I have transcribed it)

Cornish Quickstep - quite a funky tune which would brighten the mood after a more mellow one.

Re: fiddle tune ideas for a wedding??

Lots of beautiful Swedish and Norwegian wedding marches for exactly that purpose. Most traditional scandinavian fiddle cds will include some.

Re: fiddle tune ideas for a wedding??

PH,

What about some barn dances? I'm sure there are lots of great ones, though just common ones like Lucy Farr's and Bill malley's come to mind right now.

Have fun,

Re: fiddle tune ideas for a wedding??

My parents walked down the aisle to Marie's Wedding.

Re: fiddle tune ideas for a wedding??

Hi Peter,
A great tune to walk up the aisle to is the "Waltz of the White Lilies" which I discovered was written by the fiddle player Kate O'Brien from Deanta. You can download and listen to a similar version of it recorded on an album called childsplay by Bob Childs -TRACK 10 (no cost).
http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/childsplay2

Others: Ag Criost an siol - offertry
O'carolan tunes - si beag si mhor, Tabhair dom do laimh, planxty Hewlett, planxty Fanny Power, scotsman over the border!!

Good luck

Re: fiddle tune ideas for a wedding??

After Haste to the Wedding, there's The Gold Ring, Tripping Up Stairs, and of course The Four-Poster Bed ( put a grommet on the end of your fiddle-bow ! ) .
Someone played The Slockit Light this afternoon at a session !

Thanks Shtrum for a great link!

Re: fiddle tune ideas for a wedding??

The Slockit Light. Is it just me, or is anyone else getting just a little fed up with all this pseudo health food nonsense. First it was Pepsi Light & Miller Lite & now Shetland come up with 'Slockit Light'!

I know, SORRY! Time fur bed .....................................

Completely off topic, I know but I couldn't help it...

Ptarmigan: Got this email earlier today...

"Pharmacology, all drugs have two names, a trade name and generic name. For example, the trade name of Tylenol also has a generic name of Acetaminophen. Aleve is also called Naproxen. Amoxil is also call Amoxicillin and Advil is also called Ibuprofen.

The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra. After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin. Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.

Pfizer Corp announced today that Viagra will soon be available in liquid form, and will be marketed by Pepsi Cola as a power beverage suitable for use as a mixer. It will now be possible for a man to literally pour himself a stiff one. Obviously we can no longer call this a soft drink, and it gives new meaning to the names of "cocktails", "highballs" and just a good old-fashioned "stiff drink". Pepsi will market the new concoction by the name of: MOUNT & DO.

Sorry, it was the mention of Pepsi Light (or Diet Pepsi, as I've been taught it's called here...) that got me going...

Time to get horisontal now... Definitely...

Re: fiddle tune ideas for a wedding??

Don't do it!!!!! I often get asked to play for funerals which although bad enough is do-able.I once played for a wedding, Haste to the wedding as she walked up the aisle scattering rose petals etc.It was the worst thing I have ever done in my life I would rather donate a kidney.I rekon you should tell them you've broken both your arms and legs and lost your fiddle and won a holiday to Barbados
You know you'll end up doing it so good luck !!!!!!!!!

Re: fiddle tune ideas for a wedding??

Hey Jennie, why all this talk about Viagra? Come on, who's been telling tales out of school?

..... & by the way, are you the national coxteaze in Sweden?
All that talk of "pour himself a stiff one" etc etc & then you ask us to picture you getting horizontal!

Well, I suppose it might be in context & perhaps all your info might just come in handy for the happy couple in question here, but hopefully not for a few years!

Oh, & just for the record gabriel, I really enjoy playing for weddings, especially when we are often the only ones in the church (apart from the dude with the funny collar) who can actually see the couple's faces during the 'ordeal'!

Oh & I think haste to the wedding is better played as they race back up the aisle, after the event.

One of the cheerier Planxtys could be good for her entrance!

Re: fiddle tune ideas for a wedding??

What about Upstairs And To Bed and Kissed Her Under The Coverlet? Although not to walk down the aisle to..

Re: fiddle tune ideas for a wedding??

Hey, what are you suggesting flutesalad?

Around here, we only play for the ceremony, sometimes the reception & often for the Ceili, but never later on, although I understand that in some cultures a little encouragement was also given by 'well wishers' as the couple began to consummate....

I suppose for that, you would need something like say the Punch of Sniff, in the usual format, started slowly & then getting faster & faster!
Wonder how you would know when to stop playing? :-D

tisk tisk - Of course you know, this loooood talk is all Jennie's fault! :-)

Re: fiddle tune ideas for a wedding??

Merrily Danced the Quaker's Wife

Definitely *not* Bury Me Under the Weeping Willow. But that's old-time anyway.

Re: fiddle tune ideas for a wedding??

Aye, nice one Meri-pixie. I actually played "Merrily Danced the Quaker's Wife" a few years back, here in Ballycastle, for a Quaker couple's wedding reception.

Re: fiddle tune ideas for a wedding??

Unst Bridal March is beautiful and I've read that it's traditionally played in the wedding procession.

Re: fiddle tune ideas for a wedding??

I'm playing a wedding in July and for the recessional the bride wants Whiskey Before Breakfast to be played - to get the party started . . . I'm also using Lover's Waltz, Mountain House, and Give Me Your Hand for the prelude and processional.

Re: fiddle tune ideas for a wedding??

Thanks to everyone who responded! Just back from a visit to Hungary with me gran where the national pastime seems to be fiddling (second to cake eating)

against my contrary advice, the couple still want me to play the wedding... from right after the ceremony walking the whole party over to the church hall.

so I'm thinking about some nice wedding marches to start followed by more lively tunes...

many thanks
