Harmony..

Harmony..

G'day everyone,
I like to ask about harmonies ...and I suspect that harmonies would be frowned upon in Traditional music.... BUT....
In a few Lunasa tunes ( The Last Pint, from their first CD) and more recently "The Miller of Drohan " from Otherworld....they have a "Bridge" ?? in the tunes where,I think ,the flute and low whistle do a little harmony thing before going back to the main tune...this is,in my opinion very ,very pretty...
I the case of "The Miller of Drohan"...How do they go about it ???...Do they use whisles/flutes of different keys ??? I've figured out the tune using the Slowdowner with a Generation F which is a shrill little bugger ( waiting on a Susato low F ).. and I think the tune itself is in B flat.....so would it be a combo of a B flat and an F ????....or all on the one whistle/flute ??
Thats all for now....thanks,and happy playing to you ...

Re: Harmony..

Yes, when I saw them live, Kevin played a Bb Flute on The Last Pint while Sean and Cillian played Low F Whistles.

Re: Harmony..

For a nice harmony you can either play a 3rd above of a third below the melody line. (2 notes up or down)

Don't know about all the whistles in different keys, but you should record yourself playing tunes slowed up a bit and then play over them, experiment with what sounds good and see what you can come up with.

enjoy

Re: Harmony..

Harmony is best done in a group setting, or among friends who play together frequently--it is not something that should be thrown in unplanned and unorganized. Like noodling, if too many people do it too often, especially if they are trying to improvise harmonies, it can pull the music toward chaos.

Because of the limited range of whistles (especially on the low side of the scale), you generally need to use a whistle in a different key (A whistle works best working with a D whistle) or a low whistle to do harmonies on the dance tunes. That way you can get down to those notes below the musical staff.

(By the way, llig, I just realized that your name is to be read DaVinci style.)

Re: Harmony..

If you go back to the Middle Ages, they thought that the fifth was really cool. Play an Aminor tune and have somebody double it in E - makes you want to go back to the monastery. For something utterly non-trad, play the same Aminor tune with somebody doubling it in D. Different notes, different folks.
