I will be in Amsterdam in June with 15-19 June free (2006, next month). Wondering where I can travel to (train/fly) and play music with my fiddle. I will be going to sessions in Amsterdam & Groningen as listed. Does anyone know of a celtic festival mid-June, or where I can go in with sessions where I would be welcome? Unfortunately the key festivals in Breton & Galicia are not mid-June. Thanks. Jinksy.
I can't vouch for the quality of the people in attendance, but I have had june 16-17th down on my calendar for ages. In Switzerland, the Festival of corbeyrier. (I realise this is some way away from amsterdam)
I will be going because of the attendance of Lunasa and Pevar Den, to listen to music and to dance. *maybe* play my whistle. They claim there is a session bar from around midnight on both days with the musicians of the various groups also sitting in. This festival only happens every two years, so I don't know how natural/artificial, inclusive/exclusive this "organised session" will be. I expect random sessions will also pop up, but I can't guarantee anything.
If you want any information or whatever, don't hesitate to email. I only have internet access at weekends at the moment but I'll certainly respond.
(btw, access would be plane to either Geneva or maybe another of the swiss airports, then train to Aigle, then bus up. (travelling by train in Switzerland is usually quite efficient - one or two trains an hour that run on time) Accommodation is mainly camping.)
Jinksy - I was told there would be some good sessions in the SW of France in mid-June. I'm waiting to hear more details - I can let you know when I find out. In fact, it was Murfbox who told me - perhaps he'll read this and respond.
I´ve heard that there will be some sessions on 16 and 17 June, and one possible venue will be in Bordeaux.
I have no more details for the moment but, if you´re interested Jinksy, I´ll send you an e-mail with details as soon as I get them.
I think Air France do cheap flights from Amsterdam to Bordeaux. If not AirFrance then its someone else.
Would the venue be/have anything to do with The Connemara Pub?
I don't think so JimR. I have read the info on the website given above (Scottish ejdukashon and school french served me well) and it is a small village's aim to recapture traditional celtic past. The festival iscalled the Dance of the Wolf and if you wear a kilt your ticket is cheaper! I have booked and am going.
There is a band "Black Water" from Ireland. Do you know them?
Tirno - can't believe how you have helped me. Not only have I booked my trip, but I have friends nearby (in Chamonix). THANKS THANKS THANKS, and I owe you a Chablais if you get there too.
Murfbox - looks like I am all set to go to the Switzerland Festival, as above. So please don't go to any trouble getting me info on other events. Thank you anyway.
Jinksy- Im afraid I dont know the band "Black Water". Im not really up to speed on bands at the moment.
Enjoy Switzerland.I never get to go there during summer.Beautiful country.Food isnt great tho- and I know that that is a bit rich coming from an Irishman!
My goodness the Blackwater band were just fantastic - music I had not really heard of before although not radical (website http://www.lesonotone.com/blackwater). Also Red Cardell were amazing, like Edith Piaf punk sons! Lunasa werer great but to be honest not as enervating (?) as these other bands!

The website for the festival is:

I'm afraid they don't seem to have an English version yet.
